Revel in perplexity, eliminate confusion...

Martin Heidegger shocked the world twice. The first time occurred in 1927 with the publication of his earth-shattering "Being and Time." This book contained an entirely new conception of human existence, a reformulation of phenomenology, and an attempt to reorient the Western philosophical tradition. It made Heidegger's name in academia as well as Germany. His second shock in many ways overshadowed the first. Hans-Georg Gadamer, who studied with Heidegger, remembered wondering how such as thing was even possible. In 1933, following the naming of Adolph Hitler as German Chancellor, Heidegger joined the Nazi party. He remained a member to the end of its existence. Along the way he informed on colleagues and developed delusions of grandeur. He apparently desired the role of philosopher king to the new Reich. To top it off, he also informed on his mentor Edmund Husserl, who was Jewish. Heidegger practically owed his career to Husserl's patronage. As the years went on Heidegger never apologized or even seemed remorseful about his Nazi years. All the way up to his death in 1976 he said nothing. Many thought that he also felt nothing. The head scratching continues to this day.
"Heidegger: A Guide for the Perplexed" seems a suitable title for any approach to Heidegger's life or philosophy. The man's life and politics remain a frustrating snafu of incomprehension. His philosophy equally so, or so it's reputed. This book deals with only one Heideggarian perplexity: his philosophy. Nazism receives a single parenthetical mention. Those seeking biographical tidbits or juicy controversial talk about politics will find nil. Those wanting a clear, in depth, and accessible overview of Heidegger's philosophy will find just that in these 178 pages. Many books already exist about Heidegger's rather stained and nearly inhuman political past. This isn't one of them.
The book begins with an apt and enlightening reflection on perplexity. Heidegger's philosophy invites and even encourages perplexity, and the author warns against trying to do away with perplexity altogether when reading Heidegger. Perplexity is the point. One of the goals of "Being and Time" is to reorient us with our being. If honestly facing our being doesn't result in perplexity, nothing will.
The book's first part runs through the main themes of "Being and Time." It all begins with the strange word "Da-sein." Da-sein has two main characteristics: 1. it's a being for whose being is an issue for it and 2. it's a being that holds the key to the meaning of being. We all, as Da-seins," have a sense that "something's up" when it comes to our "being." But what? To facilitate exploration, Heidegger builds on Husserl's conception of phenomenology, but reorients it away from "pure consciousness" towards a hermeneutic interpretation of Da-sein's "everydayness." This results in an examination of the "world," which presents Da-sein with many "useful things." We are connected to this world, joined to it inexorably (this idea flies in the face of traditional philosophical skepticism). Its useful things remain anonymous ("Das Man") which threaten our individuality. When humans take on characteristics of "Das Man" they become "Man-selves" and "inauthentic." We are also "thrown" into existence, meaning we did not choose it. We also orient ourselves with respect to time, especially as we "press into possibilities." Also, Da-sein is never "complete" or "actualized." Death simply means the end of Da-sein, not a resolution. In light of the world that we're thrown into, Da-sein needs to realize itself as a being that "projects itself into possibilities." In this manner Da-sein becomes "authentic" and "resolute." All the details are in the book.
Part Two deals with "The Late Heidegger" (basically, everything following "Being and Time"). This era's glut of material necessitates focusing on only a few aspects. The author chooses ideas that resulted in reformulations of ideas presented in "Being and Time," including the essays "The Origin of the Work of Art," "The Question Concerning Technology," "Building, Dwelling, Thinking," and aspects of a few others. In these essays Heidegger seemed to rethink the conclusions drawn in "Being and Time" as if he found that early work incomplete or in need of rethinking. Nonetheless, his main themes remain roughly the same. The book ends how it began: with perplexity. The author questions Heidegger's duality of "thinking" versus "dwelling." Each involve a different focus on the world, but are simultaneously intertwined with each other. Thinking involves detachment. Dwelling involves absorption. How can they coexist happily? The author leaves the implications of this question to reflection and, appropriately, to perplexity.
"Heidegger: A Guide for the Perplexed" will likely perplex the uninitiated. It's not an easy book. Those completely unacquainted with Heidegger's philosophy should probably look elsewhere and return here to solidify learning. But the book nonetheless remains fairly accessible throughout and determined newcomers just might make it through. Those with backgrounds in philosophy and a loose understanding of Heidegger will find a treasure trove of descriptions and direction. It should prepare such readers for taking a first plunge into "Being and Time" or some of the later essays. As such, it provides an excellent second-level introduction to the perplexing philosophy of Heidegger.

An excellent text on par with Richard Polt's 'Heidegger'

I'm reading this book again because its worth re reading. It's very accessible and clearly written. The author obviously knows his subject judging by his ability to make Heidegger's complex ideas straight forward and intelligible. The bulk of the book covers 'Being And Time' but Heidegger's later developments are also covered.
An excellent text on par with Richard Polt's 'Heidegger'.

Steer clear of the Kindle version

This might be a good book, but the kindle version is marred by multiple mis-spellings ("HusserFs" instead of "Husserl's") and missing words (particularly short words like 'an' and 'a'). I suspect someone did a sloppy job scanning the paper version and never followed up with a thorough copy edit.
Even if the conversion to digital was exact, I'm not convinced the author presents this fascinating material in the most compelling way. Though the book starts out in clear, common sense prose, the author jumps into very complex, jargon-laid ('instantiation') discussions with little ramp up. His overview of Phenomenology, in particular, I think, will be very hard to digest unless the reader has already consumed one or two other books on the topic.
Heidegger is never easy. And, in places, this book makes tough concepts tangible. But, overall, I'm not convinced this book is a good place for a beginner to start.
