As Vickers states, scholarship is in danger of losing the criticism of the previous 150 years because of the amount of modern criticism and the rejection of previous schools of criticism. By bringing together scholarly and performance-based essays from 1775 to 1939, Baker and Vickers assure that this will not happen to the rich and varied history of The Merchant of Venice, and their choices are uniformly excellent. However, this reviewer was quite disappointed with Vickers's preface, which is strongly biased. In a collection such as this, works should be allowed to stand on their own. Vickers instead argues openly and strenuously not only for reading Shylock as a comic villain but also for the claim that one does great damage to the play and to Shakespeare by attempting any other reading. This presumes a specific view of Shakespeare, plays, and characters in general, and a point of criticism with which many readers will not agree. The strident preface may stop some from discovering the riches contained in the rest of the volume. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers." A good reference book.

The Amazon description above is an accurate appraisal of this book's contents. The major stars' careers are presented in detail explaining what made them appealing to audiences and critics who were sometimes at odds with each other's evaluations. French stardom is less formal as opposed to Hollywood where actors have entourages and bodyguards. Since this book was published fifteen years ago these actors' freedom to go out unbothered in public except for business-related events is probably restricted today due to the growing numbers of in-your-face photographers and celebrity stalkers.

if you want to know why Brigette Bardot's career was not based solely on her looks and state of undress or what differentiated Alain Delon from Jean Paul Belmondo who were the two top leading men in the 1960's and 1970's and why their stardom dimmed later, you'll find the answers here. Some of these stars mentioned here had success outside of France but in limited degrees due to their trouble speaking English or the roles weren't a good match for their acting style and persona as in the case of Jean Gabin's two films made in Hollywood during WWII. (For more info about Gabin's unsuccessful time in Hollywood, read the author's 'Journeys of Desire', a fine encyclopedia-style book about foreign show biz folks' ups & downs in America.) We're told that silent comedian Max Linder was the world's first film star until Chaplin and other Hollywood funnymen eclipsed him. He later committed suicide and most people today have never seen any of his films, let alone heard of him.

This is a pricey book that needs an update as in Gerard Depardieu's increasingly rowdy behavior and becoming a tax exile in Belgium and granted Russian citizenship by Putin, the second and third events almost a national crisis in the French press, but you will also learn about the history of the French film industry and why these actors have or had long careers.

This volume presents essays from many of the major names in the field, exploring citizenship from a fresh perspective. After two decades of strident individualism, in the light of claims that the liberal democratic state is under threat of collapse from the forces of globalization, and in the midst of a theoretical debate about the possible and desirable limits of individual autonomy, they argue that it is high time to go beyond the standard concern of what can be ascribed to citizens. We must ask what should be demanded of them, in the name of the protection of liberty, equality and stability.
