About the Author
Charles Hauss recently retired from teaching comparative politics and conflict resolution in the Public and International Affairs Department at George Mason University. fine guide to the Groundwork

I read this book in conjunction with the Ellington/Hackett edition of Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals: With on a Supposed Right to Lie Because of Philanthropic Concerns. I am not a Kant scholar or even a philosopher. I am an economic historian who must teach Groundwork as part of my college's great books sequence, so I can't speak to the finer points of how well Guyer represents and interprets Kant.

First, Guyer provides some context by discussing Kant's references to the notion of freedom in other writings, as freedom turns out, in Guyer's view, to be a driving force behind the Groundwork. He then goes through each part, Preface and three sections, of the Groundwork, laying out Kant's arguments and their strengths and weaknesses. It is especially helpful that he connects the uses and implications of the various Formulas that Kant proposes. It is also good to see how particular arguments of Kant have been assessed in the recent secondary literature. He offers his own perspectives at a useful rate--it's still a book about Kant's moral philosophy, but even at this level the scholar's responsibility to the reader includes passing along his own assessment. Guyer concludes that much of the reader's assessment of Groundwork will depend on his prior valuation of autonomy, which seems reasonable to me.

Writing about philosophy is tough: replicating the original argument too precisely will be opaque to the reader, and simplifying too much will mislead the reader. Guyer, I think, hits a sweet spot here, and I found the book enormously helpful in understanding the Groundwork. At points, Guyer writes somewhat like Kant, with sentences that run 6-8 lines long; after the fourth or fifth reading, though, the entire sentence will resolve into a series of insights that not only clarify, but could not have been written more simply.

It would have been helpful to have a reference index in which one could look up Akademie numbers to see where in this book Guyer had referred to particular sections of Groundwork. In the event, I made one up, which was a useful exercise, but Continuum might include such an index in a revised edition.

This is the second Continuum Reader's Guide I have used to prepare for this course, and so far this has been a very valuable series.

Beginning by offering an analysis of the generational and gender conflict that spans art and empire in the period, Childs moves on to examine modernism's expression of a crisis of belief in relation to subjectivity, space, and time. Finally, he investigates the war as a turning point in both colonial relations and aesthetic experimentation. Each of the core chapters focuses on one key writer and discuss a range of others, including: Conrad, Lawrence, Kipling, Eliot, Woolf, Joyce, Conan Doyle and Haggard.

Great monography on German Enfant Terrible

Leni Riefenstahl was an important film maker with a strong will. At the same time she was a person who admired Adolf Hitler and never distanced herself from the nazi-period in a serious way. Not because she was a nazi, because she wasn't, but because here view on life was that Leni could not have been wrong. After the war, through the years she insulted war victims more than once, not out of viciousness, but out of an insensibility that borders on stupidity. Would she have been prepared to look seriously into her own past, everyone would have forgiven her for her mistakes during the Hitler-period.
Rainer Rother is a first class German film scholar who obviously made a meticulous study of the work of and the documents on Leni Riefenstahl. His book is not a biography but an essay in which he concentrates on the main issues concerning her life and work. He looks at her positive en negative sides in an understanding and balanced way.

Two Sides to Every Coin

The author, in spite of all his Leni-bashing, must be something of an admirer of the great filmmaker or he wouldn't have so passionately researched her life and career. Riefenstahl and her work have always, since WW2, generated a love/hate response from her audiences and this author makes his case for the latter. While there is nothing particularly enlightening about his findings or opinions, it is always interesting to read more about the fascinating century Ms. Riefenstahl has witness and affected with her art and strong personality.

leni's refusal to admit guilt was off-putting

im not sure what the other reviewer is talking about. i thought this to be the most even-handed assessment of riefenstahl that i've yet read. not only that, but rother addresses most other commentaries on reifenstahl, so that this work can work also as a sort of bibliography for those who wish to read further. rother pretty much says that riefenstahl got a raw deal compared to other propaganda directors (mr. jud suess), but that she still deserved much of what she got. essentially (and, no, i don't view this as a "plot-spoiler"), says rother, riefenstahl was apolitical but still guilty (or, perhaps, guilty because she was too apolitical, that is, ambivilant enough to let the nazis use her (and i use the word "use" here loosely)). of course, rother goes much deeper into this, even broaching (but not always delving into) such topics as: is objectivity possible in documentary?, was leni an auteur, and thus not responsible for her artistic portrayals of nazis?

please understand that i'm rating this a 4, as in, this is four stars for books of this type, as opposed to, this is 4 stars in general for all categories. also, im trying to cancel out the other reviewer who must be some kind of uber leni fan.

Professor Jonathan J. Webster is Head of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also the Managing Editor of the International Linguistics Association's journal WORD, and the editor of the forthcoming Journal of World Languages (2014).

Outstanding explanation of SFL

I love books that can expound theories in a theoretical way. Since SFL is what they call an "applicable theory" mostly what you end up with are bunches of examples that add up to explanations about the theory. This books, however, does a great job at explanation--which is what I was looking for. I will be looking for more books with Webster's name on them.
