About the Author
J. Heywood Thomas was head of the Department of Theology at Nottingham Univeristy until his retirement in 1992 and is Honorary Profesor at Bangor Univeristy. He studied under Tillich and later taught with him at Union Theological Seminary in New York. They were friends until Tillich's death.

This is truly an exquisite Tillich-monography! John Heywood Thomas, who studied with Tillich and remained friends with Tillich until Tillich's death, provides us with an in-depth account of the life and work of Paul Tillich (1886-1965), the remarkable philosopher-theologian who implemented the thought of Schelling, Kant and Hegel, just to name the most prominent of his philosophical influences, directly and explicitly into the theological discourse of the twentieth century. Apart from accounting for these influences, Heywood Thomas interprets Tillich's many points of contact with some of the great intellectuals of the twentieth century, including Heidegger, Otto, Bultmann, Adorno and Barth. Though not as extensive as some of the older, established commentaries on Tillich (such as J L Adams' famous commentary, Paul Tillich's Philosophy of Culture, Science and Religion [New York: Harper and Row, 1965] or the earliest, and still the most valuable, collection of essays on Tillich's work, The Theology of Paul Tillich [Kegley, C & Bretall, R W eds., New York: MacMillan, 1952]), Heywood Thomas' book should to my opinion be regarded as the most penetrating and illuminating account to date of Tillich's extraordinary ability to exploit hardcore philosophical concepts within the realm of theology. These concepts include phenomenology into a "phenomenological theology", existentialism and critical theory into Tillich's own theological theories of "existence" and "estrangement", Neo-Marxist critique into a "theology of culture" and, famously, his "ontological approach" to Christology and salvation. Paul Tillich was indeed a remarkable and unique theologian, exactly because he was as much at home in a philosophical discussion as he was in the pulpit and seemed as keenly interested in art and politics as he was in his life-work as a professional theologian. The book consists of ten chapters, each dealing with a predominant theme in Tillich's work. Chapter 1 (Tillich's life and career) provides the reader with the kind of biographical information which could be considered as crucial for understanding Tillich's philosophical inclinations and his areas of specialization in theology. Tillich's experience of the trench warfare in World War I, for example, had a fundamental impact on his psyche and contributed substantially to him taking leave of the claims of traditional Protestant theology or, at the very least, his reinterpretation of Lutheran theology (pp. 5-10). Actually, it was the war experience that initiated his progressive activist attitude in politics and the church. Much ado has been made of Tillich's debauchery and his infamous erotic experiences with women directly after his wife, Grethi, left him in 1919 (p.9). Heywood Thomas puts this tragic phase of Tillich's life in sympathetic perspective. He certainly was an ambiguous character though: His arrogant personality and lifelong prone to vanity stands in sharp contrast with the gentleness those close to him came to know. He had always been very quick in expression of self-defence and very sensitive to criticism, easily accusing anyone who did not agree with him as personally hostile to him. On the other hand, he was an excellent lecturer and companion. On the one hand, he displayed an unconscious egocentricity which had always been typical of him. On the other hand, he showed himself to be extremely generous. Heywood Thomas contextualizes this complex character in the world of German (and later American) university life, showing that Tillich was many things, a man as complex as his work. I found this first chapter invaluable, not because of a biographical sketch one can read elsewhere, but because Heywood Thomas delicately links up the man with his surroundings and the texts that influenced him so deeply. In chapter 2 (p.28) Heywood Thomas discusses the interconnection of theology, revolution and culture in Tillich's work. It is tempting to begin characterizing Tillich's theology by describing it as a theology of culture, to be distinguished as such from the theology of his contemporary, friend and colleague Karl Barth. Heywood Thomas shows that this contra-Barthian depiction of Tillich's theology has been his fate as a theologian and that this fundamental contrast has lead to a misinterpretation of both theologies. This simple opposition of the two theologies has been an unfortunate misinterpretation of both - Barth's as much as Tillich's. Barth's protest was not against culture but against a simplistic correlation of Christianity and culture. Likewise Tillich was as concerned to spell out a theological critique of culture as he was to rediscover the vitality of theology in an engagement with culture. Heywood Thomas looks carefully at Tillich's argument and represents it with eloquence and style. Being educated in the Barthian tradition myself, at least to a very large extent, I found this chapter to be the most informative in terms of understanding the idiosyncrasies in Tillich's thought; especially with regards to the way in which he seems to re-implement philosophical concepts directly into archaic theological categories. This is compulsory reading for those who still understand Tillich and Barth as being in direct opposition to each other. The situation is much more complex and nuanced than we are led to believe by some Barthians in particular. ...

Not ideal for a general reader

This book would probably be useful in an academic setting, but it fell short for me, as someone who just wanted to get a deeper understanding of Ishiguro's wonderful novel. To give credit where it is due, I will note that this guide contained some intriguing insights, such as pointing out the only time when Stevens does not address his father in the third person. This is what I was looking for. Sadly (for me), the bulk of the book addresses academic concerns. I suppose it is somewhat interesting to look at the differing viewpoints as to whether Ishiguro should be considered a Japanese writer, but such things go on at far too great a length for a general reader.

The biggest failing of this book is that it almost completely ignores Miss Kenton as a character. Stevens is the narrator, and the book is mostly about him, but Miss Kenton does provide enough fodder for analysis. Ironically, about the only treatment she gets here is a comment in the section about the movie that Emma Thompson shows us what Miss Kenton could be like, if she was allowed to live. It's too bad this guide didn't recognize the life she did demonstrate, and devote a few pages to her.

The chapter on Style, Form, and Irony is worth the price of the book itself. It leaves no stone unturned and turns up some you'd never have imagined.
This slim volume begins with a study of the author, moves to an analysis of the book itself, the issues and sub themes, comparative literature, the reception of the novel, some questions, a bibliography and recommended reading, and more. There's even a section on the movie Remains of the Day for comparison.
This is the first book by this author in this series I have ever tried, and I would buy anything by either again: it's that good.

An Excellent Book

This volume is a most distinguished contribution to the Continuum Publishing Group's new series of studies by international scholars of important contemporary fiction. Professor Adam Parkes eschews popular academic jargon and writes in a clear, straight-forward style, giving a brilliant and succinct analysis of this many faceted book.
The 90 page book will interest and inspire the general reader and, in particular, will prove an ideal tool for those teaching modern literature in universities or sixth-forms but, best of all, will send the reader back to the novel with his understanding and enjoyment enhanced.

About the Author
Bill is currently the Director of Training for Focus on Solutions, an independent training agency specialising in using the Solution-Focused approach. He has introduced many thousands of people to SFT through his lecturing and training courses.

His background is in social work, youth work, lecturing, counselling and management. Bill designed and led the first Masters degree in Solution-Focused Therapy offered by the University of Birmingham.

Bill is a Fellow and Senior Accredited Counsellor of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

He is the author of Solution-Focused Therapy (1998 / second edition 2005); Solution-Focused Stress Counselling (2001) and co-editor of The Handbook of Solution-Focused Therapy (2003). Bill has contributed numerous book chapters and journal articles on the Solution-Focused approach.

Stop the Husserlanian perplexity...

The name Edmund Husserl remains somewhat obscure in the Britsh-American Analytic philosophic tradition, but on the Continent he's a celebrated pioneer. His thought outright rejects the skeptical "mind as a closed cabinet" notion prevalent since the 17th century in the work of Descartes, Locke, and others (and continues, in the Analytic tradition, in various forms down to the present day). Consequently, for many across the pond, 20th century German philosophy ends with Gottlieb Frege. The reason for such dismissal comes down to one word, invented by Husserl: phenomenology. This bloated word had colossal influence on 20th century Continental philosophy. Husserl paved the way and the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur, and others followed dancing their own variations on this dominant motif. Phenomenology removes consciousness from the camera obscura closet and places it squarely in the world. It plugs us in. This seemingly simple idea has drastic implications, one of which is obscurity. As this new "science" dove into new realms, language met its limits and research exposed concepts for which no terms yet existed. This helps explain the impenetrable perplexity that greets many newcomers to phenomenology: the field requires a new and more flexible vocabulary. As such, no one should simply plunge their brains into Husserl's turgid dense prose without some guidance. Between the chartreuse-themed covers of this deceptively small book such guidance awaits.

Given the brain grinding density of this "introductory" text, absolute newcomers should probably look elsewhere, but nonetheless plan to return later to granularize their phenomenological knowledge. This one gets fairly nitty-gritty and may soil hands. This rings especially true for the first part of this two-part book, called "The Idea of Phenomenology: Psychology, Logic, and Transcendental Philosophy." Following a smooth sail explaining Husserl's critique of psychologism (the idea that psychology founds the laws of logic), the text drills deep into "eidetic sciences" and their relation to, and founding of, "natural or a posteriori sciences." As the discussion turns to ontology, "regional essences," eidetic singularities, and the "ur-region," the text takes on dense conceptual weight. Sometimes the effort equates to climbing a skyscraper made of pudding. But fervent reading will pay off as a whole new conception of the world unfolds. Things lighten up as the "transcendental reduction" appears on the horizon. This involves an "ironic distancing" from our everyday conceptions of the world so we can investigate it without the "natural attitude" interfering. A description Husserl's thought experiment called "the annihilation of the world" helps elucidate this crucial idea. A last notion of transcendental subjectivity as absolute substance provides a perfect segueway to the book's second part: "Phenomenological Topics." This section, though still challenging, doesn't hurt like part one. A litany of basic phenomenological terms and concepts unfolds: intentionality, intuition, evidence, categorial intuition, time-consciousness, the ego, and intersubjectivity. All receive detailed explanation and elucidation. Husserl's depth, influence, and radical stance towards the world becomes indubitably evident by book's end. His ideas penetrate like magma through a slushy. The final chapter outlines Husserl's "crisis of the sciences," or their separation from direct reality or "the lifeworld." In other words, as the sciences increase in abstraction they tend to lose their function as meaningful social practices. "Mathematization" or "idealization" of the world makes the world more convenient for scientific investigation, but ultimately limits its use-value. Husserl's proposed cure for "the crisis" involves an archaeology (an almost Foucaultian one) to recover the origins of scientific inquiry within the lifeworld (essentially, the world, full of useful objects, in which we exist as subjects and seekers).

The book's brief, almost non-existent, conclusion claims that finishing this book aptly prepares the adventurous for Husserl's primary works. Given the intense mental acrobatics required to navigate this innocent looking block of paper, that claim seems credible. But whether one delves into Husserl's texts or not, this book delivers what it promises: a comprehensible overview of one of the twentieth-century's most innovative thinkers. Though daunting, the effort pays off, and those who persevere will come out the other end smelling nicer than they went in. Husserl expands thought, regardless of the controversies, particularly those from the Analytic school, surrounding his conclusions and methods. Not only that, anyone wanting to appreciate the roots of 20th century Continental philosophy should have more than a casual acquaintance with Husserl's thought. "Husserl: A Guide For the Perplexed" will provide an intricate understanding of a unique and original thinker. Sharpen those neurons.

Very in Depth but not for the Perplexed

I enjoyed this book because I've read A LOT of Kant and some Heidegger but even still this book was difficult. I wanted to get a good intro into the fundamental concepts of Phenomenology but this book was just too opaque. The issue I have with this book isn't that it's a bad book on Husserl, but that it's a bad book for the perlexed on Husserl. The author of this book writes like Husserl and Kant, and that's not very simplifying, in fact it's just kind of a waste of money and time because I might as well read Husserl himself if I'm going to be reading a guide to him which is equally as perplexing. Perhaps they should write a guide for thew perplexed on this guide for the perplexed.

The author casually goes on for paragraphs with ambiguously defined concept upon ambiguously defined concept as if the perplexed reader can follow along wading through a river of ill defined vague terminology. And it's the clarifying of this vague terminology which is the key to demystifying Husserl. There were a few pages in this book where I simply had no idea what the author was trying to convey. I would not recommend this book on Husserl unless you know Kant very well, and perhaps have read some other book on Husserl and Heidegger which is easier to comprehend.

Fortunately I comprehended most of this book, and although I applaud the author for writing a nice summary of Husserl's ideas, he has really has done a bad job of making a book for the perplexed. I'll give it two stars for having content on Husserl but I'm taking away three stars for the pretentious writing and the lack of clarity in defining concepts. It's a good book just a bad book for beginners, so do not buy this book if you are a beginner, I can't recommend it.

It seems that this series of books on the perplexed are mostly just books which provide a general summary of the authors, not books which are clarifying. I think this book would benefit by including far more analogies and terminology clarification. It is possible that Husserl himself never provided this and that the author is just doing his best but I suspect that by the way the author writes that he is clued in and could have provided this.

This book is definitely a great book to read for those who are doing educational research. It gives an inside and detail methodology of how , where and what to do when you are doing your research. The part that I like best is the Part 2: Methods and their limits that give me a better pictures and ideas on survey research and case studies. Grade A for this book.
