'The editor and authors in this volume make a convincing case for focusing on advanced foreign language instruction. Importantly, they invite consideration of this focus as an opportunity to re-examine conventional definitions of the target of instruction. In so doing, readers also learn more about the theories highlighted in this volume, and their capacity to enhance our understanding of advancedness and its development within an educational context. This book thus mediates between linguistic and language learning theories and educational practice, modelling the very best of what applied linguistics has to offer.'

Diane Larsen-Freeman, Professor of Education, University of Michigan.

The reality of multicultural societies and globalization has increased the demand for language abilities that far exceed those that have typically been associated with communicative competence in a second language. This book examines the acquisition of advanced levels of ability in three parts: theoretical; descriptive; and instructional. It moves beyond the traditional constraints of second language acquisition research by linking systemic functional linguistics and sociocultural theory. The contributors draw primarily on the work of Halliday, Vygotsky and Bakhtin, as well as empirical data from the language classroom, to suggest practical applications towards advanced literacy and linguistic competence.

Advanced Language Learning will be of interest to academics researching systemic functional linguistics, second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

"With this edited volume, Byrnes has added one more publication to the growing body of literature (of her authorship and that of others) on advanced language learning (ALL). In this collection, the notion of advancedness in language learning and instruction is explored through a very special lens: the illuminating potential of Halliday's systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and Vygotskyan sociocultural theory (SCT)...This is an excellent volume. The chapters are all well written and rich in stimulating ideas. The book balances adequately the theoretical with the practical, offering support for a new approach to L2 classrooms that truly places meaning at the center of instruction and makes ALL both a possible and desirable goal...serves wonderfully as a point of departure for exploration of aspects of meaning, context, and use in advanced language teaching and learning from an integrated SFL and SCT perspective." -María C. M. De Guerreo, MLJ Reviews, (Modern Language Journal), Vol. 92 No. 2, 2008 (María C. M. De Guerreo)

"The book, however, is not as well balanced in terms of the two perspectives used as theoretical bases, with the majority of the papers taking an SFL outlook rather than an SCT one. In addition, although the compatibility of Hallidayan and Vygotskyan theories is alluded to in several contributions, there is no thorough or extended treatment of how the two theories can complement each other in approaches to advanced language teaching." —María C. M. De Guerreo, MLJ Reviews, (Modern Language Journal), Vol. 92 No. 2, 2008

Time for Revolution (Athlone Contemporary European Thinkers), by Antonio Negri

Written in prison two decades apart, these two essays reflect Antonio Negri's abiding interest in the philosophy of time and resistance. The first essay traces the fracture lines that force capitalist society into perpetual crisis. The second, written immediately after the global bestseller, Empire, develops the two key concepts of empire and multitude.

Time for Revolution explores the burning issue of our times: is there still a place for resistance in a society utterly subsumed by capitalism?

"Time for Revolution constitutes a major philosophical statement by one of the most important thinkers of our time."—Fredric Jameson

"We discover here another Negri, a Negri deeply immersed in a philosophical, even a theological problematic. This book is a MUST: it provides the proper background for Negri's widely circulated analysis of the global capitalist Empire."—Slavoj Zizek

At the tip of time's arrow
By Mr. N. Coombs
A time for revolution contains two volumes from distinct points in Negri's career. The essays written in prison, which form the latter half of the book, are what I have read in depth and are what I would like to discuss.

Kairos, Alma Venus and Multitudo represent concurrent and cumulatively logical essays outlining a materialist ontology, tying together as primary concepts a temporal epistemology, ontology of the common, and conceptual framework for differentiated action. To explain this, jargon free, Negri claims that through most of the history of philosophy and of knowing subjects there has been a false transcendental illusion of knowledge that exists external to time, and that this form of knowledge is privileged and replicated by the interests of the powerful. His project is to restore the belief among subjects that change can be affected and of the possibilities time affords. He wishes to tie in this priviledging of the tempral nature of knowledge to a logically consistent ethical basis of the common and refutation of power.

These essays are prefaced by an insightful and absorbing introduction in which Negri explains his tribulations with the state of Italy, and through his elaborate articulation sets himself within the pantheon of philosophical minds. It is not surprising then, especially considering the aim and extent of this project, that a Time for Revolution often comes off as a quasi-mystical Platonic text, evading specificity, and tending towards the very transcendentalism loathed by Negri. Strangely, however, for this reader this logically inconsistent facet of the text is perhaps one of the greatest draws; to enact hope of change: hearts and not just minds are in need of being won over.

Like Spinoza Negri pushes his philosophical message through with sheer eloquence at times, the very mysticism of what is sometimes being proposed gated into sequenced paragraphs.

This book has been an inspiration to me. The density of the writing is so heavy, you feel that perhaps a whole life's thoughts have been compressed into these essays, meaning that with each reading the writing reveals something new. I am currently working on a film about Savonarola that draws on many of the themes in these essays, if you are interested in discussing Negri's work or my film email me at ncoombs@fastmail.co.uk

A groundbreaking materialist theory of time.
By Vinay Varma
This book contains two books written by Antonio Negri in a span of 20 years. Negri was involved in the Italian far left Operaismo and Autonomia movements and is deeply inspired by the philosophies of Marx, Deleuze/Guattari and Spinoza.

The first book - 'The Constitution of Time' is written from a Marxist materialist perspective. It starts with the aporias of time in Marx's works, especially 'Capital', 'Grundrisse' and 'Theories of Surplus Value' such as between intensive and extensive labour time, or between the time of historical materialism and subsumed labour time as values in economic circulation. Negri distinguishes three kinds of time in the subsumed time of captialism - collective, productive and constitutive. In each, he distinguishes a concept of time that is oriented to control and another that is oriented to freedom. Finally, he distinguishes positive and negative variants of the 'time for revolution'.

His aim is to lay the foundation for a time of resistance in a world of control. However, his Deleuze/Guattari borrowings and his dogmatic materialism mar his first book. The first book also suffers from an excess of assertoric rather than logico-analytical statements.

The second book - 'Kairos, Alma Venus, Multitudo' represents a real breakthrough in the philosophy of time. Written 20 years later it represents greater intellectual clarity and helps understand the previous work.

Negri says that time is always the tip of the arrow that has been released. Accordingly, being is always in a state of transformation. Past is a psychological construct and so is future. Neither past or future is experienced time. Time as becoming, as tip of the arrow - is neither past nor future but a time when being transforms itself by inaugurating the new or 'to come'. He also criticizes the focus on being and neglect of time in ontology and launches an attack on spatial metaphors of time which represent time as a sort of plane with past, present and future arranged in a line.

He then goes on to explain other concepts like language, love, multitude, power etc. based on his concept of an ontology grounded in time. This second book is remarkable for the step by step way it builds up its arguments.

Despite his strong anti-Hegelianism and rejection of 'dialectics', he uses a very dialectical method of developing his own arguments , in both books. But, that is one of the strengths of the books and not the soruce of their weaknesses.

His weaknesses lie elsewhere. His materialism and his Deleuze/Guattari heritage, leads him to resort to contortions in order to deal with the question of subject and resistance - because like all materialists he seeks to avoid questions about consciousness and will and like post-structuralists he is uneasy with the question of the 'subject'. However, unlike Deleuze/Guattari he does not bypass the question of the subject by reducing living beings to desiring machines or in any other way, but comes with as good an explanation of the concept of 'subject' as is possible from a strictly materialist perspective.

Potere Operaio
By Jujubee
I have university degrees in Philosophy from universities in the USA with focus on "Contiental Philosophy". Yet this has to be one of the most difficult and estoric readings I have ever undertaken. Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit seems like a bed-time story yet with dedication and a background in Post-Structuralist Marxist writing you will gain something of substance from it.

In any case the first work (it contains two distinct works) exposes a unique theory of time. Comparable in ambition to Henri Bergson's theory of Duration.

Walter Benjamin and Romanticism explores the relationship between Walter Benjamin's literary and philosophical work and the tradition of German Romanticism, as well as Holderlin and Goethe. Through a detailed and scholarly analysis of the major texts, the book explores the endurance of Benjamin's relationship to Romanticism, the residual presence of Romantic Goethean and Holderlinian motifs in Benjamin's subsequent writings and how Benjamin's understanding of the relationship between criticism and Romanticism can still play a vital role in contemporary philosophical and literary practice. Review
"From beginning to end Walter Benjamin engages in an intimate debate with the origin and legacy of German romanticism. This is the first volume in any language that has given this dense and difficult topic its due and will prove to be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the complex shape of Benjamin's thought."—Peter Fenves, Northwestern Universitymuslim

“The essays collected here will doubtless prove invaluable for those interested in tracing the origins of social theory, literary criticism, and philosophical reflection on language, translation, and the nature of art. Given Benjamin’s steadily increasing importance to these and other related fields of humanist inquiry, this book cannot and should not be overlooked.“ —Choice (CHOICE)

'It is true to say that the theme of Romanticism is central to a great deal of work on Benjamin today and this volume successfully shows the depth and relevance of that work, not only for Benjamin scholars, but also for anyone researching the philosophical, cultural and literary links between Romanticism and the present.'
'The historical and biographical detail is not presented in a dry and overly scholarly fashion, but with a feeling of excitement and respect for an extraordinary text.'

'Due praise must also go to the editors for arranging the collection in such a way that the essays can often be seen to follow on from one another; developing themes, motifs and subtly shifting focus and varying interpretations.'

Definition in Theory and Practice: Language, Lexicography and the Law, by Roy Harris, Christopher Hutton

The problem of definition has a long history and has engaged the minds of some of the most eminent thinkers in the Western tradition, from Plato and Aristotle onwards. But it is also an everyday problem constantly confronting all who have to draft or interpret the countless texts on which modern society depends. Definition in Theory and Practice focuses on two areas where difficulties arise in a particularly acute form: lexicography and the law. Examining a wide range of approaches and definitional techniques, backed up by detailed analyses of dictionary entries and court cases, the authors provide a comprehensive survey of their subject. They argue that what underlies the problem of definition are conflicting assumptions about the way language functions. This in-depth study of definition will be of interest to academics researching lexicography, semantics and the intersection of linguistics and jurisprudence.

Review
"Gail Ashton's Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales represents a new direction in the venerable handbook tradition. While she does not ignore traditional topics like sources, structure, diction, and genre, Ashton recontextualizes their significance in light of the latest research into late-medieval material culture and discursive practices, and the uses to which 'Chaucer' has been put by later artists and critics. Likewise, Chaucer's well-known preoccupations (or better said, those Chaucerian themes with which critics traditionally have been fascinated)—are seen afresh through Ashton's effortless command of the strengths and weaknesses of current theoretical approaches to Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales. With an approachable style that is conversational yet precise, Ashton has freed Chaucer's great work from the strictures of a hide-bound, univocal textuality and released it into the contemporary conversations concerning gender and performance, hybridity and reception, as well as memoria and auctoritas, and academia and theoria. The Chaucer that emerges from Ashton's succinct but powerful survey is an author fully immersed in his culture and experimenting with the traditions of his time, but a writer equally and inevitably reinterpreted by succeeding generations, including our own. Gail Ashton's Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is Chaucer for the twenty-first century." - Daniel T. Kline, Associate Professor of English at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

"Concise yet comprehensive, this excellent guide combines essential information with illuminating analyses that draw on the most recent developments in Chaucer Studies." - Steve Ellis, Department of English, University of Birmingham, UK. (Steve Ellis)

"High school and college-level literary collections strong in Chaucer studies will find Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales a fine reader's supplemental guide which introduces readers to Chaucer's life and times. Chaucer's history and culture are surveyed in chapters, which provide a critical approach to the Tales based on recent critical analysis, blending readings of key tales with ideas questioning approach, genre, language, and even culture. Students will find it an excellent approach." —James A. Cox, Midwest Book Review, May 2008

"Aston has written an easy-to-read and clearly laid out guide for students of Chaucer...Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales represents above all a study in interpretation, a reflection on how we should approach Chaucer from our contemporary vantage point. It is this open-minded refusal of critical closure that will ultimately give students the confidence to pursue their own readings." - Conrad van Dijk, H-Net Reviews, May 2008 (Conrad van Dijk H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online)

Slavoj Žižek is widely regarded as one of the world's most important contemporary thinkers. His work has contributed dramatically to the reinvention and revivification of many key theoretical and political debates. Indeed, his vociferous and challenging body of work amounts to a sustained, ground-breaking, terrain-shifting and far reaching intervention into a large number of academic disciplines, intellectual fields and cultural debates. The Truth of Žižek addresses the rigorous critical assessment demanded by this broad and increasingly influential corpus. This timely and compelling collection of essays from an international team of leading Žižekian scholars addresses the full range of Žižek's theoretical interventions, assessing critically the political, philosophical, psychoanalytical, cultural and institutional stakes of his work. Each chapter engages with and challenges Žižek's thought to explicate a key aspect of his work, clarifying its importance and challenging its claims through rigorous critique. By focusing on Žižek's contributions to these disciplines, fields and debates, this collection sets out to diagnose and assess the emergence of a ' Žižekian moment' within contemporary intellectual, cultural and political events. The Truth of Žižek provides the first sustained engagement with and assessment of the significant impact of Žižek's work. This compelling and valuable collection of essays from cutting edge scholars picks up the gauntlet thrown down by Žižek: the demand that his readers respond with 'the coldness and cruelty of true friendship.'

Review
Mentioned as tie-in to film 'Zizek'. (Publishing News)

Anthologies providing context on contemporary thought and contemporary thinkers often err on the side of eulogy and submission to the reputation of the specific philosopher-hero. This collection of essays on the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek at least has the advantage of being a precise opposite to this usual norm. In the same way that Žižek's own work pulls no punches in its assessments and critiques of the other thinkers, so too this collection vehemently challenges the bases of Žižek's myriad claims and counter-claims. Indeed, several of the essays adopt the strategy of personalizing the argument even towards ad hominem points (a strategy Žižek lambasts in his Afterward). " - Dr Jones Irwin, The Philosopher

embarrassing 'scholarship'-but can function for some higher end
By noeton
Perhaps the idea behind this book is: 'With what passes for 'truth' these days, why not try obfuscation?'

When the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason emerged, Kant was ignored except for a few concerned empiricists. Their awkward attempts to render Kant a 'higher Berkeleyian' nevertheless proved useful in provoking further efforts to grasp the critical turn, leading to the later developments in German Idealism which we all know and love. Let us hope "The Truth of Zizek" can come to merit a similar place in history. If not, it will surely find its place in the dustbin.

A collection of committed culture studies hacks, deconstructionists, and discourse theorists, all with bayonets fixed, it suffers from a tenor of so many butcher's wives who can't fully integrate the challenge to their positions Zizek has been laying out for years. There is very little, if any, substantive engagement with the core of Zizek's theory. At its best there are some respectable and interesting attempts, but at its worst there is little but name-calling and misrepresentation borne of lazy research and old-fashioned sophistry. One is tempted to think the entire project of the book was to license further academic straw-maning of Zizek in a desperate strategy to prolong a serious confrontation with his philosophy. Yet as though their own dictum of tolerant fairness proved their undoing, in the final essay Zizek responds, (bitterly, as he hoped for more,) laying waste to their efforts. It is so effective, one is further tempted by the conspiracy theory that Zizek orchestrated the whole affair to make himself look good by way of contrast with his rivals.

If you are seeking the truth of Zizek, this work remains to be done. If you are looking for the truth of the Academy, you've found it. Three stars for this moderately provocative bungled effort. I suppose students of current philosophical trends, who require easy pickings for their scholarship, will find this book an abundant resource.

commodification of Zizek,
By scarecrow
This focus is what Zizek abhors, if you ever hear him, while twitching-touching incessantly his nose, face;sweeping back fast his eyebrows; this commodification is the very paradox he loves and hates,Has he been "concretized" now? No I hope not, well not with one single Book as this one;In the process we can say the dialectic of technologies of the Self is amplified beyond Foucault's "fragmentizing" power indices; He is now transformed.I don't know if he likes that. He'd rather be the one "commodifying".

Taking him down a notch or two(if that was the intent here),is perhaps a comradly endeavor, Love is given, a Badiou-ian category of ontology; or peerless cognitive illumination the kind Dennett does. We don't know.But Zizek loves the complexities of the Mind and where it goes, What it desires,So a "Critique" can "Doublkeback" onto itself, if it is not careful. For we all desire the same thing;
We, most of us as Zizek loves the welters and nested areas of ambiguity and often finds it in Cinema or Opera. We feel much like Wotan, in control but out of it in what we have done. What Zizek has done then is open to a "Kritique".
His own Lacanian "comfort zones", Literature, the Cinema,Popular culture are places to start; That's where Ideology resides there within the Kung Fu Panda.. In fact the two writers here claim there is too much opaque unexplained undecipherables in Slavoj, that need thought. We need to think clearly and tidy him up. .

But the subject here is difficult to take-apart,to see weaknesses.
In reclaiming Hegel and Lacan via Marx, Zizek has full arsenals of reserve, he can go 30 rounds in a 15 Round Bout. And shows he's more committed to certain subjects and places in the globe than those who are suppose to be, like his Middle East bouts with Bernard-Henri Levy.
It's like saying you don't like the shape of a circle because it is too much a "circle", Why can't it be something else.
Theory provides predictabilities,The Lordship and Bondsman, consistent with how we function within the Real; things we don't know we become.

So Bowman and Stamp got lots to do within The Hegel-Lacan-via Marx reclamations. Those are all strong "force fields", easily providing "Cognitive Maps"(as Jameson says someplace)for Zizek and his intense performative impassioned Lectures.
He has made himself impenetrable, like North Korea,Kansas or parts of Lebanon itself. Zizek's "Great Wall" are many and he depends on the tried and the tested by bringing fresh accents and content to every subject he touches and twitches around.
Zizek's ambiguities reflects its own resonance in the hinterlands of theory. He has "Hollywoodized" this for us;So how do we pin it down.

These twin movement(s) between the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real, again Lacanian "pillars" of consciousness are strong and everything in between doesn't yield good diatribe.
Everything between Zizek also finds fascinating; His incessant digressions(improvisations) are ones trying to discover the boundaries between one to the other;(where Art ends and Reality begins, or where language tells us more about Alice's Tea Party) Well, one digression is worth a Thousand Pictures;

But the two authors here, well versed in theory that Zizek spouts and promuligates finds ample ground to tweak the Slovenian 'bear' at times but only in moments of those nested hibernations Adorno, and Badiou would call "Universals".Unalterable at times, things that transcend the Present.

You can't pin Slavoj down for too long because the thought itself is always in flux-motion,anxiety-ridden,progressive, searching, and when it does stop it does stop on lifeworld thinking we all can hang our hats on.When it does stop he's off to a new subject a new paradigm to contemplate.

What this book does do is start the process for more critique of what we already have of Slavoj, Where do we meet him then?, on the other side of the mountain? No, right here and now, we work backwards, as Adorno daid of Hegel, what does he mean to current reality as we find it Right Now! Books like this unfortunate are part of the system to be criticized;the self-sustaining system self-perpetuating itself, isn't that capitalism?

You need to go directly to the sources,Zizeks and those suggested in Slavoj if you want to be a brother or a sister and find weak points, weak realms, "unknown" Rumsfeldian places. Take for example Slavoj lack of real everyday political activism,He learns much from talking on the phone, away from the Frontlines; his glibness(only at times) with economics; He rarely mentions Peter Gowan, Giovanni Arrighi, or Robert Brenner, soul-mates par excellance I'd think, But Wait ! that might be the next Book. . . He does have a focus on the classic all-encompassing "political economy" of Marx, but again it is only applied in case by case manner, not seeing the full systemic of a situation, perhaps like a David Harvey or Mike Davis.
To see the content of current financial meltdown Slavoj is only a passing place.Go to where it really happens,Of course He would tell you the same as well.

Saturn's Jews: On the Witches' Sabbat and Sabbateanism (The Robert and Arlene Kogod Library of Judaic Studies), by Moshe Idel

This book explores the phenomenon of Saturnism, namely the belief that the planet Saturn, the seventh known planet in ancient astrology, was appointed upon the Jews, who celebrated the Sabbath, the seventh day of the Jewish week.
Moshe Idel details how the anonymous, late 14th century Sefer Ha-Peliyah was to have disturbing consequences in the Jewish world three centuries later, interweaving luminaries with the cultural, historical, religious, and philosophical concepts of their day, and demonstrating how cultural agents were inadvertently instrumental in the mid-17th-century mass-movement Sabbateanism that led to the conviction that Sabbatai Tzevi was the Messiah.
Exploring how the tragic misperception of the Jewish Sabbath by the non-Jewish world led to a linkage of Jews with sorcery in 14th and 15th-century Europe, associating their holy day with the witches' 'Sabbat' gathering, Idel brings this wide-ranging study into the present day with an analysis of 20th-century scholarship and thought influenced by Saturnism, particularly lingering themes related to melancholy in the works of Gershom Scholem and Walter Benjamin.

A very valuable resource
By Jay C.
There is much to praise in Prof. Idel's monograph. He does an excellent job of demonstrating that Sabbateanism was not solely a result of Lurianic Kabbalah, but rather an outgrowth of several factors working in concert. He persuasively shows that Jewish astrological speculation from the 14th to the 17th centuries C.E. -- and Jewish ideas about the planet Saturn, in particular -- influenced Sabbatai Tzevi and created fertile ground for the spread of Sabbatean ideas. Prof. Idel adduces numerous sources confirming the role of the planet Saturn in Jewish theology and ritual, and these sources tell their own story irrespective of Prof. Idel's commentary. The hard work that Prof. Idel did to compile these sources is to be praised and justifies the price of his book.

Substantively, I have one minor criticism. Prof. Idel's thesis is flawed insofar as he dismisses the possibility that astrology and Saturnism was original to Judaism. He sees astrology as a 14th-century external influence on Judaism that led, in the 17th century, to Sabbatai Tzevi's self-perception as an earthly manifestation of Saturn and that made the Jewish world of the 17th century receptive to Tvevi's messianic claim. Prof. Idel fails to appreciate that astrology was a widely accepted science in the ancient world and that all ancient religions must be understood through the lens of astrological ideas. Among other things, he misses an opportunity to interpret the so-called "dark side" of Saturn as the very essence of Jewish non-dualism. Prof. Idel's thesis would be stronger if he accepted the possibility that Arabic texts permitted a rediscovery in the 14th century of an astrological core that was part of Judaism from the beginning. In this regard, Prof. Idel overlooks much interesting evidence that begs for thorough analysis.

For example, Abraham hailed from "Light of the Chaldeans" ('Ur Kasdim). The Chaldeans of Mesopotamia were so deeply involved with astrology that the word "Chaldean" eventually became a synonym for "astrologer," and the phrase "Light of the Chaldeans" can only refer to the study of heavenly lights. (Today, Vedic astrology is called "Jyotish," which means "light.") In addition, when Abraham tells YHVH that he has no sons to inherit from him, YHVH urges Abraham to read his destiny in the stars: "And He took him out to the outside, and He said, `Look, please, toward the heavens and recount the planets if you are able to recount them,' and he said to him, `So will be your offspring.' " (Genesis 15:5) Also, the Jewish practice of observing the Sabbath came (along with Abraham) from Mesopotamia, where it was observed on the new moon, full moon, and the 8th and 22nd days of the lunar month, and where it had clear astrological implications. There is some evidence that the Jewish Sabbath, too, was originally synchronized with the phases of the moon and that it became a weekly cycle only after the Babylonian exile. Significantly, every observance of the Sabbath that is mentioned in the Torah occurs on a new moon, a full moon, or on the 8th or 22nd day of the lunar month.

Several other scriptural proof-texts establish that astrology (and the effort to transcend astrology) was a central part of ancient Jewish theology and ritual. For example:

Deuteronomy 4:19: "And lest you lift your eyes toward the heavens and you see the sun and the moon and the planets, all the legion of the heavens, and you be drawn and you worship them and serve them that YHVH, your god, apportioned to all the nations under all the heavens."

Judges 5:20: "From the heavens, the stars fought . . . ."

Amos 5:25-26: "In the wilderness for forty years, O House of Israel, you carried . . . your images of Saturn (Chiun) -- the planet of your god -- that you made for yourselves." (The Hebrew text refers to "Chiun"; the Septuagint (2nd or 3rd century B.C.E.) translates "Chiun" as "Remphan," which was the Egyptian name for the planet Saturn.)

Psalms 19:2-7: "The heavens recount the glory of El; the sky relates the work of his hand . . . ."

Job 22:12-14: "Is not God the high-point of the heavens and, see, the highest of the planets that are aloft? And [so] you say, `What does El know? He will judge [from] behind darkness. Thick clouds hide Him, and He will not see, and He will traipse the compass of the heavens.' "

Job 38:33: "Do you know the decrees of the heavens?"

Ecclesiastes 1:9: "What has been, that will be, and what was done, that will be done, and there is not any new thing under the sun." (That is, "under the astrological spheres.") See also Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 [all events are determined by time].

In addition, the Babylonian Talmud (4th or 5th century C.E.) expressly validates the power of the astrological forces. (See, e.g., Shabbat 156a.)

Despite my criticism of Prof. Idel's thesis, I am very grateful to Prof. Idel for his valuable contribution to our understanding of medieval Judaism. This book should be read by all people who are interested in the origins of Sabbateanism and the role of Saturn in Jewish thought.

A very good book, but be warned that the topic is very, very, focused. It's about what the title says, but little else.
