I didn't read it all, I skipped the part about Terry Pratchett because I haven't read his books and the analysis didn't mean anything to me.
The other two were OK, I focused on the one about Le Guin which is the reason I bought the book. It's good.

Exhausting argument, but enlightening

The contention of this book by Fr. Moore is that documents recently written by the Holy See concerning homosexuality, their theological underpinnings and scripture references are incorrect. Moore is a Thomist and argues effectively, although some may perceive these arguments as obtuse or lengthy. This is the Thomistic manner and is both careful and systematic. Additionally, Moore is careful not to challenge the Catholic Church's teaching that homosexual acts are immoral. His book challenges the arguments in Persona Humana, Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons and a Note on discrimination are not accurate. The position of the Vatican in these publications cannot be maintained by the arguments they contain.

Moore carefully examines scripture references by interpreting what these statements mean through the language and cultural context in which they have been written. While making allowances that the Bible may in other places may condemn homosexual actions, the passages referred to in the above-mentioned documents cannot. He also examines traditional teaching from Augustine to Aquinas and beyond.

This is not a popularly written book, but a careful one and deserves to be part of the Roman Catholic Church's examination of sexual morality.

A Thorough, Methodical, and Responsible Approach to the Issu

Gareth Moore's "A Question of Truth: Christianity and Homosexuality", is perhaps the most thorough, methodical, and responsible approach to this issue confronting Christians today. Moore examines the arguments put forth by the Roman Catholic Church, but these will sound familiar to most Christians who take the "love the sinner, hate the sin" approach to commenting on the lives of other-sexually-oriented people.
It must be said that the reading can be difficult at times, as Moore, a theologian, carefully constructs his argument as any good philosopher will. That being said, he does attempt to make it as accessible as possible to the general reader, avoiding overly technical language and making good use of more common everyday analogies. It should also be noted that the text reflects the British idiom and so includes items that may be unfamiliar to some American readers.
Yet it is well worth the effort to get through the book. Moore insists on removing all considerations of motive and character from those whose analysis differs from his own, focusing instead on the arguments themselves. He bends over backwards to be fair and impartial, while at the same time holding up the official positions of the Roman Catholic Church to close scrutiny. Invariably, he finds them wanting.
Those whose minds are made up and who are not open to logical argument probably should not bother with this book. Those who are open, however, may find in it a new possibility for better understanding the subject from a thoroughly Christian point of view.

About the Author
Richard Nelson-Jones was born in London in 1936. Having spent five years in California as a Second World War refugee, he returned in the 1960s to obtain a Masters and Ph.D from Stanford University. In 1970, he was appointed a lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Aston to establish a Diploma in Counselling in Educational Settings, which started enrolling students in 1971. During the 1970s, he was helped by having three Fulbright Professors from the United States, each for a year, who both taught students and improved his skills. During this period he broadened out from a predominantly client-centred orientation to becoming much more cognitive-behavioural. He also wrote numerous articles and the first edition of what is now The Theory and Practice of Counselling and Therapy, which was published in 1982. In addition, he chaired the British Psychological Society's Working Party on Counselling and, in1982, became the first chairperson of the BPS Counselling Psychology Section.

In 1984, he took up a position as a counselling and later counselling psychology trainer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he became an Associate Professor. He continued writing research articles, articles on professional issues and books, which were published in London and Sydney. As when he worked at Aston University, he also counselled clients to keep up his skills. In 1997, he retired from RMIT and moved to Chiang Mai in Thailand. There, as well as doing some counselling and teaching, he has continued as an author of counselling and counselling psychology textbooks. A British and Australian citizen, he now divides his time between Chiang Mai and London and regularly visits Australia.

great insights - common sense and more!

I'm volunteering in a reading program starting with kindergarten kids. This book contains such a good variety of circumstances, problems and general issues with children from K through high school that it gives me the insight to at least attempt some useful methods of handling my students. Since I only mentor 1 child at a time, some of the instances are less relevant to me, but still useful in understanding the stages and problems kids might go through. I appreciate the rather extensive experience the author brings to the subject and found the reading very engaging. I strongly recommend this to anyone who feels they need some amount of guidance or clues to what in the world can be done to get these kids to actually enjoy reading! (or any subject that kids are likely to encounter.)

A pleasant change from the usual...

Okay, we all know the stereotype - the nerd who is incapable of carrying on a conversation with the opposite sex, but is able to speak fluent Klingonese; the geek who can't shoot a basket to save his life, but who can personally reenact the final lightsaber duel from The Phantom Menace (complete with sound effects); the misfit who owns every Star Wars actionfigure ever produced, displayed on a set of shelves built into the walls of - wait for it - his parent's basement!
I give you the stereotypical science fiction/fantasy fan.
Only, stereotypes are an inch of fact and a mile of embellishment and conjecture. Are there fans that dress up like Mr. Spock and wave the V sign, telling you to "Live Long and Prosper"? Sure there are! Are there people who can do perfect imitations of a wizened, green puppet (and now CGI character) asking the Force to be with you? You bet!
However, such stereotypes are only a small portion of what encompasses fandom, but they are likely all that the non-fan (or "mundanes" as in the Harry Potter series) may envision, because it is upon the more flamboyant fans that the media so loves to shine their questionable spotlight. Yet, in truth, fandom is as varied as - well - "real life!". For every guy dressed as a Jedi and waving a plastic lightsaber at a Star Wars premiere, there is a family in jeans and t-shirts sitting down to share popcorn in the front row of the theater.
Perhaps most unfortunate of all is the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) suggestion of superiority on the part of the media covering fandom - the outsider studying some exotic, and not quite healthy, cultural phenomena and offering it up as an object of amusement if not outright derision for the "normal" masses.
I've heard the jokes and the put downs, repeatedly. I've come to expect it. So it was with some trepidation that I picked up William Brooker's study of Star Wars fandom. "Here we go again," I thought. "Someone who thinks they understand fandom and is going to tell us all about the "unhappy, socially inept fans who use science fiction and fantasy as a form of escapism from their sad, miserable little lives."
I was wrong. The first thing you should know about Will Brooker is that HE is a fan himself, and this gives him a unique perspective - not to mention it makes it more likely fellow fans will trust him enough to allow glimpses into aspects of their lives they have learned to keep secret to avoid ridicule. Brooker walks the walk and talks the talk. He respects his fellow fans and their views, and he presents them in a fair minded and non-judgmental light in his book, which makes for a pleasant change.
Furthermore, he discusses fandom from many angles, including those that are often overlooked or somewhat obscure and may not be familiar even to many that consider themselves Star Wars fans. Do the terms PWP, EU, "gusher" and "Space Wheat" mean anything to you? They will once you have read this book, and some of the insights you discover may surprise you. Brooker covers such topics as women in fandom. How do they view the Star Wars universe, and how do their reactions and expectations differ from those of the men who tend to dominate science fiction? What about creative expression in fandom? When fans use George Lucas' characters and universe to inspire their own flights of fancy, whether it be through short films, writing or art work, is this a form of homage to Lucas or a blatant disregard for legal copyright laws, or both? How did fans react to The Phantom Menace? Was it a disaster or a glorious success, or a little of each?
So who should read this book? Everyone! Non-fans should read it to gain an insight into fandom. Fans are not simply some exotic creatures you only see dressed in Jedi robes on the news coverage of a Star Wars premier. Fans include the teacher in your child's classroom, the vet who takes care of your dog, the guy who programmed your business software, the kid down the street who mows your lawn, and the Air force meteorologist. They are people like you, and, yes, like me - I am a fan and proud of it.
Fans should read to gain a broader view of the myriad aspects of fandom and the response people have to the Star Wars phenomena. As Brooker points out, Star Wars fandom is a dynamic, complex entity. Many fans don't even agree on issues covered in this book. However, for the most part, they do speak a common language that allows for immediate recognition and a sense of inclusion in a world where fans often feel excluded. Even when they disagree, there is a sense of community - a community Brooker knows well.

A biased review

I'm admittedly biased, as my web site is mentioned in this book, and I'm mentioned by name a few times in the chapter on "Slash and Other Stories," but this is a really good book. It's a respectful, honest, and entertaining look at Star Wars fandom today. It covers everything from group viewings, to arguments over what constitutes canon, to fanfic, to fan films, and more. I had to skip the "Speculation" chapter because after only two paragraphs, I'd gotten some pretty huge honking spoilers on Ep 2, but I'll go back and read it on May 17th. The author himself is a fan, so that most likely contributes to the respectful, fun tone of this book. It's not complete by any means, and there are some major omissions that caused me to only give this a four star rating instead of a five, but still, Star Wars fans looking to read a good analysis of our culture should definitely check this out.

Very entertaining, but could have been even better.

This is, fundamentally, a smart and funny book about being in love with Star Wars. But Brooker walks a difficult line between being a fan (which he most assuredly is) and being a scholar. Some of the time this works, some of the time his analysis seems slightly skimpy to me. Ultimately, I think the book would have worked better if Brooker had cast aside his academic pretensions (and that's not supposed to sound mean) and concentrated on writing a clever, witty, well-researched fanbook. Because, damn, he can write so well! Parts of this book had me doubled over with laughter - although he's very careful not to laugh at any of the fans he's in contact with. In fact, you probably have to be a fan to find this amusing, it's all about laughing at yourself. I didn't come away from this book with any huge insights, I'll admit. But I did get a very warm sense that this level of fandom is a positive thing, and that a life of following Star Wars is just as valid as a life of sports-watching, novel-reading or religious devotion. Definitely worth reading!

Great introduction for the beginner

This book is meant to be an introduction for someone that doesnt have a good background in philosophy. It is easy to read and states things in simplistic terms. The author gives many examples from real life situations when he wants to explain an idea. He manages successfully to introduce the reader to Hume's original work. Key passages are quoted and well explained. This is the first book that I have read in the Reader's Guide series and thanks to it I plan to get more titles.
