Translator Oliver Feltham stayed "as close as possible to Badiou's syntax" but "at the price of losing fluidity." The logic behind this sacrifice being that Badiou's syntax does its own philosophical work; the unfortunate result being that many sentences, though elegant in French, are wounded in English. For example, this hop-along on Marxism: "That the dialectic of its existence is not that of the one of authority to the multiple of the subject." Thankfully, Badiou addresses such dissonance and his larger philosophical goals in an indispensable new preface-without which the 37 weighty meditations might be lost to the layperson. Even with the new preface, those reading Badiou or Continental philosophy for the first time might experience something intellectually akin to running into the ocean. (Ethics: An Essay on the Understanding of Evil is a slimmer, more accessible introduction to this novelist, and playwright and professor at Ecole Normale Superieure.) Otherwise it takes a miracle to understand the four theses of this work, organized as they are into a chevron consisting of Being, Event, Truth, Subject. BADIOU'S MASTERPIECE FROM 2005

BADIOU: SOMEONE LIKE PLATO OR HEGEL AMONG US.
Now I understand why Zizek holds Badiou in such high regard. It is because of this book from 2005; most assuredly. I have read approximately "8" postmodern thinkers from France and Italy thus far; and all of them begin with a fundamental presupposition: the announce that they will presume "set-theory". This preface does qualify any writer at least in the realms of externality and the unconscious. Only during re-construction do we see the differences emerge. Now I realize that Badiou Is the foundational source of all neo-left postmodern philosophy. This book is already being hailed as a Masterpiece; and a turning-point in European philosophy. I can see why. I've studied Badiou before, but this manuscript has much more logical and in-depth presentation. This manuscript presents Badiou's "set-theory", from alpha to omega. It takes set-theory to its eventual conclusions in every area of subjectivity and objectivity. Nothing is excluded. He uses triads for a few of the more difficult areas, which is helpful . You will finally understand the finer points of postmodern thought that others only touched on. This is the adventure - actually "seeing", for the first time, the thought behind the postmodern movement in France. I don't think I really need to recommend a masterpiece; but 5 stars of course.

AN IMPORTANT POSTSCRIPT: after "7" years , a philosopher is allowed to modify his position. Badiou published "the adventure of french philosophy" in 2012. In it, he offers an ethics which would have been impossible within the context of this 2005 manuscript. An "ethics of restoration" (restoring finitude to finitude), does not open the possibility of novelty. A real problem for someone who emphasizes the necessity of differentiation in positing. That is why in 2012 in introduces the concept of "hidden names", within the sub-multiple set. His thought is easier to embrace with this qualification. I recommend reading both books if you get the chance.

Question about the binding

This isn't a review of the book's content, but rather one of the book itself: I'm particularly irritated by the manner in which the paperback text was bound. Although I'm reluctant to actually go ahead and do so to see, I don't think it's possible to fully read each page all the way to the margin without breaking the spine of the text. Was Continuum just trying to save money on paper by condensing the margins, or what? Particularly as one nears the middle of the book, it becomes exceedingly difficult to read the entirety of the verso sheet.

Quite frustrating. Not to suggest that Verso's publications are any better, nor any less expensive for the poor quality - the publishing market for leftist theory seems to have a major form / content problem going on.

This book along with Logic of Worlds strikes me as the major metaphysics book of the philosophical moment. Applying set theory to Being, realizing that sets are primarily linguistic, but the act of objectification non the less, seems to me to be the best approach to consolidating all current science into a basic framework. This framework gives us the illusion of understanding the nature of the universe, consciousness, and everything else humans care about.

Absolutely amazing

Having studied Derrida for a while, I have to say that this book is tied for my "BEST INTRODUCTION to DERRIDA." The other text is Penelope Deutscher's "How to Read Derrida." If you are just attempting to get into the rich and complicated thoughts of Jacques Derrida and his poststructural ideas, I highly recommend this amazing text.

I havent read Derrida before and this series of books gave me a good understanding about Kierkgraad , so i bought this one on Derrida. I am utterly disappointed with the book, the series publisher must may attention that who ever writes in this series must be able to communicate complex ideas in simple way and not in more complicated way. I do not buy the idea that Derrida s concept are so obscure that they cannot be explained in simple terms. I have come across such situations before with other thinkers and always managed to find resources where someone really understood the concept/ideas and was able to explain it clearly .

This mongrel is a mutt!

This overview and mini-diatribe tries to pick up where Cosmopolis left off, and succeeds rather well--unfortunately, Sandercock's first book in this series didn't really take us anywhere. She seems to be responding to criticism that her superficial synthesis of multicultural planning theory is long on posture and short on application, but there isn't enough meat on this dog's bones to really meet these expectations. Chapter 6, "There is no hiding place: Integrating immigrants," best addresses these concerns. However, her attempt at positive recommendations quickly decays into another hodgepodge of case studies a la Cosmopolis I, where planners' previous mistakes are scowled upon as cautionary tales, with no path to an enlightened practice shown for the reader.

Overall, a well-intentioned work, but incomplete. Sandercock's ivory-tower theorist's perspective belies her self-proclaimed gritty street-level expose of the 'invisible.' It is left to the reader, or a researcher more inspired than herself, to give this stray dog a home with the working planner.

Planning comes of age?

Leonie Sandercock has produced a magnificently readable and cool 'sequel' to her 1990s offering of Cosmopolis. Cosmopolis II is a breath of fresh air in the increasingly stale debate over urban planning processes and their links to theory. This could take planners beyond the 'facilitating/mediating' role in battles over planned developments and their impacts, particularly on marginalised peoples and groups. Planners need to become listeners rather than stage-managers, to learn the community's stories and aspirations BEFORE, not after, firm plans or alternatives are devised. A more inclusive approach, which affords communities the chance to tell their own stories and to identify the special values and places in their environments that they want respected, is called for. Sandercock gives current examples of such approaches restoring the development balance in favour of people. They are drawn from progressive 'mongrel cities' : this is not a mere post-modern pipe-dream.

Paradigm Crisis?

Sandercocks book transports the readers to a different realm of a world where difference is celebrated and not avoided. The text forces the reader to confront the realities of our less than perfect society and dares to propose solutions that can only be achieved in utopia. overall a good read for a planner who desires to open the mind to a new world of possibilities; and maybe even a paradigm shift which is much needed in the era of postmodernist relativist limbo.
One thing that did not appeal to me though were the graphic images which i believe is somehow celebrated creativity but i find rather unappealing .overall a very interesting book that provided food for thought. Highly recommended

This was an excellent analysis of Goethe's Faust that gave me new insights into the deep, subtle and complex work. Faust, like the west, is in a struggle for meaning in life, whith each creative act we destroy older forms of order and identity which unleash new and dangerous forces. I purchased the Google Play edition which was considerably cheaper.

About the Author
Sue Cowley is an expert on behaviour management, and on creative approaches to teaching and learning. She has written numerous bestselling education and parenting books, which have been translated and published around the world. Sue has written for many teaching publications, including the TES and Nursery Education, and she had her own series, 'Manage that Class' on Teachers TV. Sue has also appeared in front of the Education Select Committee, as an expert witness on behaviour in schools. Great contribution to English-language Lefebvre studies

This text provides an excellent English-language review of the broad and complex work of one of the greatest French-language philosophers and social theorists of the 20th century. The few items of Lefebvre's large ouevre that are available in English translation are frequently demanding. Elden's book offers a concise and compeling exegesis of Lefebvre's major intellectual threads and provides a recommended companion to Lefebvre's own writing for English-speaking audiences.

That said, Elden's book would also serve well for readers wishing to familiarise themselves with the major theoretical concerns of Lefebvre without wishing to delve too deeply into the original works.

The book is particulary good in its ability to draw out many of the aspects of Lefebvre's thinking beyond the analysis of space - aspects that have been sorely neglected in much English-language use of Lefebvre (to be fair, no doubt due to a lack of adequate translations of primary texts).

Elden provides a very good set of notes as a critical apparatus that refer readers to many worthy secondary articles and texts. While the publisher's review suggests that the book pays particular attention to Lefebvre's relation to his contemporaries, this is a bit of an overstatement. His relation to the French Communist Party is thoroughly discussed for the level it is aiming at, however Lefebvre's cross-pollination with other French Marxists such as the Arguments Group is not covered in sufficient depth and the discussion of his relation to the Situationist International is highly uncritical - indicating perhaps Elden's largely uncritical rendering of Lefebvre's work more generally.

Overall a superb addition to English-language study of Lefebvre and one which fairly positions Lefebre as one of the most important Western Marxist contributors.

Victor Klemperer (18811960) was Professor of French Literature at Dresden University. As a Jew, he was removed from his university post in 1935, only surviving thanks to his marriage to an Aryan.

About the Author

Victor Klemperer, a front-line veteran of the First World War, became Professor of French Literature at Dresden University. He was taken from his university in 1935 because he was Jewish, and only survived because of his marriage to an Aryan.

An Erudite look into the change of German Culture and Language

After I took a rather large block of time to read the entire edited entries of Victor Klemperer's diaries entitled "I shall Bear Witness" and "To the Bitter End", I went on to read Klemperer's thesis on the language of the Third Reich.
As a well known professor of philology, Klemperer goes into great detail as to the change of the German language during the 12 year reign of the Third Reich. Along with the daily writings of Klemperer's diaries, Victor also engaged in his thesis of the language change which occurred in Germany from 1933 to 1945.
Many things that were said during the aforementioned time period had double meanings. To a Jew in Nazi Germany, the word privilege had an ominous meaning. In fact many rather innocent words, phrases and idioms meant rather different things to different people in Nazi Germany.
Victor Klemperer had the time and also the temerity to note these changes in the German language. As an oppressed Jew who actually survived the Nazi regime, he indeed noted the change of meanings in language and also the change of meanings in the very essence of German being and culture.
Klemperer is a latter day descendant of a mythical fly on the wall. To note he was a rather highly educated fly. Herr Klemperer really did see the black side of a totalitarian government. What is amazing is that Klemperer did indeed survive. To add to this rather amazing fact, the person who survived, was indeed intelligent enough to write about the happenings and form a rather succinct opinion of what transpired.
This book in a gem. I'm going to read it again, in order to benefit from all of Klemperer's thesis. I'm sure I'll learn more of this rather gruesome time period. If you have an historian's inclination, please do read this rather magnificent work.

Fascinating Insights Into the Corruption of Everyday Speech in the Third Reich

I was impelled to get this book after reading Klemperer's outstanding 2-volume diary of his time surviving as a Jew in Hitler's Germany. I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years, 1933-1941 - I Will Bear Witness 1942-1945: A Diary of the Nazi Years During those years, Klemperer kept himself sane and productive by secretly working on writing an account of the changes he heard in people's language as they absorbed the mindset of the Fascist regime.

He documents the incursion of usages such as "fanatical" to describe everything praiseworthy. He notes how the names of mythic Teutonic heroes or Wagnerian characters became popular as given names, while Biblical names such as "Christian" were discouraged or banned altogether from use by "Aryan" members of the population. Jewish people, on the other hand, were required to append Old Testament names to themselves to further identify and segregate them.

Language was inflated. Nothing was allowed to be ordinary. Everything was pronounced as if from the podium of a State Occasion, and was directed, not to individuals, but to the masses. The smallest act became "historical" or indicative of a "blood" struggle. The use of superlatives abounded.

Besides such gross changes in language, Klemperer explores many subtle changes - the kind that seep into use below the level of awareness and work to insidiously alter one's outlook. You didn't any longer ask if so-and-so was ill. You asked if he was on the sick-list, because illness had to certified. It was a status that could only be bestowed by a higher authority. You didn't say you earned some money. You said you took home a package of pay. Again, the good was bestowed by a higher authority and did not come as a result of your singular, individual efforts.

These are just a few examples of the telling observations you'll find in these pages. Although Klemperer gets a little philosophically abstract here and there, and even makes some contradictory observations regarding usage - overall this book provides the kind of insight into the everyday lives of people in the Third Reich that you find in few other places.

It is strongest in documenting specific changes in languages usage. However, like almost every other work examining the horrors of the Regime, it fails to answer the overarching questions of "Why? - "How?" The reader is left to grapple with that overwhelming puzzle. The transformation and appropriation of the German citizenry becomes especially puzzling when viewed in light of certain other dictatorships that we've become familiar with since then - regimes that, despite heavy inflictions of a dictator's exhortations, have not led members of the general population to speak or think in such overloaded tanker terms.

What causes one people to be so virulently infected with the fervor of grandiose abstractions, while other groups of people come away from similar exhortations simply with regret and an ironic shrug?? That remains the unanswered, and perhaps unanswerable question. Even as brilliant an observer as Klemperer doesn't quite pull all the individual instances of transformation together to answer that ultimate "How?"

Victor Klemperer,a Professor at Dresden University,catalogued words used by the Third Reich from 1933-1945.Klemperer was stripped of his tenure at the University when the Nazi's declared that Jews could not hold such positions.In that time,Klemperer notated the words that became the "catch" phrases and "now" words of the Fuhrer's thinking.These words,he noted,were the "language of poverty" and appealed to the common masses,i.e "dummying-down" the language.This language,though,as he referred to it as the "L.T.I", the Language of the Reich,became the words used on the bourgeois lips in order to enflame German people against the Jews, and to embolden them to rise up for their Fatherland.
Have you ever been in a conversation with someone who seems to "parrot" back what they have heard; nothing is an original thought, but only some form of "propaganda" or "mind-controlled" speech? I have! Perhaps this is why this book upset me so.I see and hear this everyday and it scares me to see how propaganda and word use in a very particular way can all of a sudden take on a new and more sinister meaning.
I read this fascinating book after seeing LANGUAGE DOES NOT LIE: The Victor Klemperer Diary on The Sundance Channel.
