But what happened on September 11th 2001 was in many ways an old fashioned act of terror, representing the destructive side of the human passions. Frank Furedi argues that the greater danger in our culture is the tendency to fear achievements representing a more constructive side of humanity. We panic about GM food, about genetic research, about the health dangers of mobile phones. The facts often fail to support the scare stories about new or growing risks to our health and safefy. Our obsession with theoretical risks is in danger of distracting society from dealing with the old-fashioned dangers that have always threatened our lives. A must read for parents

Frank Furedi does a great job looking at the broader issue of fear and all the factors that contribute to a culture of fear. Parenting, politics, environment, social, neighbors, neighborhoods, crime, history, "evolution" are many of the factors that are looked at in making the arguement that misantropy is the issue at heart.

A great book for an individual to assess their own habits of risk and put those risk into prospective. Look at the facts, not hype.

Positions is a collection of three interviews with Jacques Derrida that illuminate and make more accessible the complex concepts and terms treated extensively in such works as Writing and Difference and Dissemination. Derrida takes positions on his detractors, his supporters, and the two major preoccupations of French intellectual life, Marxism and psychoanalysis.

The interviews included in this volume offer a multifaceted view of Derrida. "Implications: Interview with Henri Ronse" contains a succinct statement of principles. "Seminology and Grammatology: Interview with Julia Kristeva" provides important clarifications of the role played by linguistics in Derrida's work. "Positions: Interview with Jean-Louis Houdebine and Guy Scarpetta" is a wide-ranging discussion that touches on many of the polemics that Derrida's work as provoked.

Alan Bass, whose translation of Writing and Difference was highly praised for its clarity, accuracy, and readability, has provided extremely useful critical notes, full of vital information, including historical background.

THREE “EARLY” INTERVIEWS WITH THE FOUNDER OF “DECONSTRUCTION”

Jacques Derrida (1930–2004) was a French philosopher and writer, best known for developing a form of semiotic analysis known as “Deconstruction.”

He wrote in the prefatory “Notice” to this 1972 book, “These three interviews, the only ones in which I have ever taken part, concern ongoing publications. Doubtless they form… the gesture of an active interpretation. Determined and dated, this is a reading of the work in which I find myself ENGAGED: which therefore is no more my own than it remains arrested here. This too is a situation to be read, a situation which has governed these exchanges in their actuality, their content, and the form of their enunciations. Thus, no modifications were called for.”

In the first interview, he states, “In what you call my books, which is first of all put in question is the unity of the book and the unity ‘book’ considered as a perfect totality, with all the implications of such a concept… At the moment when such a closure demarcates itself, dare one maintain that one is the author of books, be they one, two, or three? Under these titles it is solely a question of a unique and differentiated textual ‘operation,’ if you will, whose unfinished movement assigns itself no absolute beginning, and which, although it is entirely consumed by the reading of other texts, in a certain fashion refers only to its own writing. We must adjust to conceiving these two contradictory ideas together.” (Pg. 3-4)

He explains, “I try to keep myself at the LIMIT of philosophical discourse. I say limit and not death, for I do not at all believe in what today is so easily called the death of philosophy… To ‘deconstruct’ philosophy, thus, would be to think… the structured genealogy of philosophy’s concepts, but at the same time to determine… what this history has been able to dissimulate or forbid, making itself into a history by means of this somewhere motivated repression.” (Pg. 4)

He states, “I believe that I have explained myself clearly on this subject. ‘Of Grammatology’ is the title of a question: a question about the necessity of a science of writing, about the conditions that would make it possible, about the critical work that would have to open its field and resolve the epistemological obstacles; but it is also a question about the limits of this science.” (Pg. 13)

He observes in the second interview, ”When I speak, not only am I conscious of being present for what I think, but I am conscious also of keeping as close as possible to my thought, or to the ‘concept,’ a signifier that does not fall into the world, a signifier that I hear as soon as I emit it, that seems to depend upon my pure and free spontaneity, requiring the use of no instrument, no accessory, no force taken from the world. Not only do the signifier and the signified seem to unite, but also, in the confusion, the signifier seems to erase itself or to become transparent, in order to allow the concept to present itself as what it is, referring to nothing other than its presence.” (Pg. 22)

He says, “On the one hand, expressivism is never simply surpassable, because it is impossible to reduce the couple outside/inside as a simple structure of opposition. This couple is an effect of diférance, as is the effect of language that impels language to represent itself as expressive re-presentation, a translation on the outside of what was constituted inside. The representation of language as ‘expression’ is not an accidental prejudice, but rather a kind of structural lure, what Kant would have called a transcendental illusion.” (Pg. 33)

In the third interview, he suggests, “Reading is transformational… But this transformation cannot be executed however one wishes. It requires protocols of reading. Why not say it bluntly: I have not yet found any that satisfy me.” (Pg. 63)

He clarifies, “I will say that my texts belong neither to the ‘philosophical’ register nor to the ‘literary’ register. Thereby they communicate, or so I hope at least, with other texts that, having operated a certain rupture, can be called ‘philosophical’ or ‘literary’ only according to a kind of paleonomy… what is the strategic necessity (and why do we call ‘strategic’ an operation that in the last analysis refuses to be governed by a teleo-eschatological horizon?...) … that requires the occasional maintenance of an OLD NAME in order to launch a new concept?” (Pg. 71)

These interviews provide some genuine insights into Derrida’s early books and ideas, and will be of great value to anyone studying his thought and its development.

he is a monolith, but also a man

positions is a collection of three interviews with derrida, all of which offer a pretty good introduction to his line of thought. this book is a lot better starting point than say, 'of grammatology', its really a lot less intimidating. this is of course because derrida is speaking verbally, 'improvising', and there isnt as much seemingly paradoxical word play. from 'positions' you can get a pretty good idea about what differance, logocentrism, and grammatology are all about. ignore all the criticism of derrida as a reductionist/nihilist who wants to demolish philosophy, he is a brilliant, poetic, innovative man.

Positions is a collection of three interviews with the late Jacques Derrida, given after the major works (Writing and Difference, Grammatology) had already been released. This volume is a very helpful introduction to the major concepts Derrida developed-you will come to be acquainted with differance, logocentrism, and the archi-trace. Although this is not the best explication of deconstruction (as it has often been described), there is no doubt that Derrida's casual remarks on his work are elucidative and still creative. The interview with Kristeva is particularly interesting.

Jonathan Aitken, a former MP and cabinet minister, is the author of 12 books, including his award-winning biography of President Richard Nixon. His recent titles published by Continuum include Pride and Perjury, Psalms for People under Pressure, Prayers for People under Pressure, Charles W. Colson: A Life Redeemed, Heroes and Contemporaries and Nazarbayev and the Making of Kazakhstan.

The genuineness of Jonathan Aitken - British Cabinet Minister, convicted perjurer, jailbird and now-reformed character

Being highly sceptical by nature, and merely on the basis of media reports, I have had reservations about the reformation of Jonathan Aitken. But I should have read one of his books earlier. As it is the summer holiday, I have finally got around to reading the second volume of his autobiography, Porridge and Passion, which starts with the drama surrounding his sentencing at The Old Bailey and covers his experiences at three of Britain's high security prisons, his post-release depression and the rebuilding of his life through his studies, his re-marriage and his new career as writer, speaker, broadcaster and volunteer social worker specially in the field of the rehabilitation of released prisoners.

The book is by turns disturbing, frightening, funny and poignant. Aitken has the ability to focus on an aspect of life and recreate it, as well as the ability to apply his considerable intellectual and human skills to major social challenges such as prison reform (one of his new passions).

Some people will continue to have reservations about his reformation. I must here declare that I now have none: (1) he acknowledges his fault simply and clearly (though I would have liked greater insight into why he lied under oath in court, I am not sure that we humans really understand our motivations very well); (2) he has paid the price that society required of him; and (3) he has gone about paying his debt to God and to his family with simplicity and (as far as I can work out) with consistency. His new life seems entirely admirable.

If you are looking for an inspiring gift for someone, or simply for your next book to read, I warmly recommend this book and I am myself looking forward to reading his other books.

This books is exceptionally well written. A real page turner. Importantly, it tells what God can do with a person with a broken and contrite spirit. Highly recommended

Covers All Aspects Including the Film

Reading A.S.Byatt's "Possession" can be a daunting task as the novel is not only interpersed with poetry and letters written by all the fictional historical characters, but is filled with allusions that only a lifetime afficiando of literature would understand. This little book by Ms Burgass will help the less erudite reader peel back the layers that comprise the entire work.
The guide is broken down into various sections that will answer questions regarding all manner of topics related to the novel. The author, the novel itself, the novel's reception, the novel's standing today, and a helpful list of study questions,further reading and websites round out the chapter topics.
I found the chapter on the novel sufficiently comprehensive to answer all my questions regarding the fictional works of Ash and LaMotte. Coverage of the novel's various themes was also extremely instructional.
I recommend this to all who enjoyed the movie and want to fully enjoy the book's entire experience.

valuable guide

Especially if you are in a book group that will be discussing "Possession", this is a thoughtful, comprehensive guide to that convoluted novel. It will ease the rather daunting task of taking in the nuances of A.M. Byatt's literary romance. Also included is a brief biography of Byatt. Recommended.

Finding Ways To Balance Good Desires So They Can Co-exist

I give this book 5 stars because it did what I hoped a book like this would do: It gives the reader more ideas, history, and perspectives from which to interpret A.S. Byatt's novel "Possession." This is not a Cliff Notes. It's more like if you invited a person who was way "too" smart and "too" informed to your book club discussion. Of Byatt she says, "She has worked assiduously towards encompassing what are frequently regarded as mutually exclusive states." And this is true in so many ways. Byatt takes on ideas that most people consider contradictory and challenges those assumptions capably.

There is a "signifanct part of the work (Byatt's fiction) which is semi autobiographical." "As the main title suggests, the novel is about possession, and in line with its complex form dramatizes multiple aspects of this theme, exploring the nature of possessive love and the contrary impulse to self-preservation; superficial possession - of things - and supernatural possession by ghosts, literal and metaphorical; the quest for knowledge (intellectual possession)," and "a degree of self-possession (pride)."

Catherine Burgass examines the book's form, plot choices, and language. She gives examples of the literary criticism and reviews the book has received from major media sources and different schools of thought (old and new). The book intrinsically asks how do contemporary focuses and forms interact with the considerations of the past and future? "Part of Roland and Maud's mutual attraction is, paradoxically, a shared desire for solitude."

When A.S. Byatt was asked if she was tempted to write biographies of other people, she replied, "I do not wish to spend most of my life on somebody else's life - not one other person's life. The words came to me long before the plot of the novel, Possession, and it was to do with being taken over - or alternatively, taking somebody over, depending on whether you're a sympathiser or a hunter."

Byatt's characters are beautifully complex. Ash is sensitive to past, modern, and possible future sensibilities. So "at one point in the novel, Ash considers the way to win Christabel: 'He would teach her that she was not his possession' (p.279)" or anyone else's possession for that matter. And in the end "She and Ash remain linked in their lifetimes, poignantly through this child, whom neither of them can publicly own." The "child" in the novel could be representative of many good things they shared, their literal child, their chemistry of ongoing communication, or the things their relationship created in the real world. The novel explores how and why both characters choose to hide or silence parts of their relationship.

Love that creates consistent beauty and quality is rare. Some people think it comes only once. Some believe they can experience it in several ways, at the same or different times. Some find it in art and work as much as they find it in other people. Regardless, it is rare for most people. And the novel and the Reader's Guide explore how seemingly contradictory loves may co-exist by reconsidering perceptions, definitions, and forms.

I wrote a review of the movie before I read Ms. Burgass' Reader's Guide. My review is on Amazon if you'd like additional perspectives. If you like the movie Possession or the novel, and you'd like to consider it further, I highly recommend this book. Ms. Burgass really cared about the intelligence, complexity, and work that went into creating the novel. And her Reader's Guide may open doors to considering the story in new and valuable ways.
