The explosion of interest in death in recent years reflects the key theme of this book -- the rhetoric of death -- the way cultures use the most potent weapon of words to bring new power to life.

Human identity and its transformation through mortuary rites are explored through the mummies of Chile and Egypt, African sacrificial deaths, Indian cremations, immigrant cemeteries in the U.S., ancestor rites in Eastern religions and in Mormonism, and the freeing of the dead in cryonics.

New research findings are presented on cremation and afterlife beliefs, especially reincarnation, sensing the presence of the dead and the death of pets in Britain, to show how mortuary rituals are constantly changing in response to death as a major feature of the human environment.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Douglas J. Davies is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham. As director of research projects on both cremation and burial, he has undertaken the most extensive gractical study of these topics conducted in Britain. Many of the results are incorporated in this book.

For the serious minded student

This is an important book in the field of Celtic studies, particularly in the area of Celtic spirituality and theology. Published in 2000, a stated intent is to dispel many of the widespread romantic/fictional notions about Celtic Christianity. The book could easily have been titled, "Setting the Record Straight" and challenges many of the "feel good" themes popular in Celtic books. O'Loughlin, an expert in the field of Celtic studies, uses a razor sharp mind to raze away many false notions-and backs up what he says. O'Loughlin has written extensively on the subject and also wrote an excellent primer in Celtic spirituality, "Journey on the Edges". These are both heavy hitter kind of books, and I am not overstating myself when I say these two books alone have possess a different and higher level of scholarship than many other Celtic books in my collection.

Not an easy book to read by any means. Chapters often have to be read and re-read to be fully understood. The book is somewhat pricey but if you are serious about Celtic research and scholarship, this book is for you.

The phrase "Early Irish" means the period from the fifth to the tenth century. Much theological material survives from then, but scholars have mostly used it for historical purposes, such as determining which church fathers the Irish knew. In this welcome, indeed overdue, volume, O'Laughlin examines theological themes. Throughout the book he struggles against modern perceptions of an idiosyncratic Celtic Church, "an eco-friendly, Augustine-free zone without formal theology or law" (19). This phenomenon has many parents from Irish Protestants who portrayed a national church that maintained its independence from Rome to contemporary New Age types who simply resent formality-and usually intellectuality-in religion. O'Loughlin argues for a distinctive Irish theology in the sense that every society has brought its cultural values to the understanding of Christianity. The Irish considered themselves part of the Western Church.
Two examples will show O'Loughlin's method. Adomnan of Iona (625-704) wrote De Locis Sanctis, about the Holy Land that he had never seen, yet this book became popular in the early Middle Ages. Adomnan applies Augustine's exegetical principles to his subject, and, "teasing out references to places in the Fathers," he established the theological significance of specific sites. His description of salt "fulfill(ed) a need, expressed by Augustine, for book on minerals mentioned in the Scriptures" (80). O'Loughlin similarly demonstrated how the Collectio Canonum Hibernorum embodied not just a collection of legal decisions but also a particular theological stance, such as exalting virginity over marriage. All in all, a fine book by a leading scholar.

The Celtic Church: Orthodox, Catholic and Celtic

I find Thomas O'Loughlin's handling of the material refreshing. I practice Celtic Orthodoxy everyday in my own life as a deacon serving in the Celtic Orthodox Christian Church (an Eastern Orthodox old calendarist jurisdiction using translations of the Stowe Missal and other liturgical materials). Because I practice it, the theology of the old Celtic Church has become a part of my living tradition and my heart's expression of love and worship of God. O'Loughlin understands our Christian heritage intellectually and I recommend it to be a part of anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the Orthodox Christian faith from a Celtic perspective. Of the other authors (who have commercially published on this topic), I could only recommend Ian Bradley. The fad of Celtomania seems to have begun because for the longest time academia largely ignored the heritage of the Irish, the Scots and the Welsh and placed emphasis on Anglo-Saxon in the English-speaking world. Then along comes various ethnic studies limited to minorities. Celtomania became the place for any crackpot theory. Now Celtic studies are finally becoming serious. We can do without the immature romanticism of New Age, the neopagans and the various anachronisms we have had to endure about our Celtic heritage. We can lose the scholars who contend that there was no Celtic Church. We can lay to rest the notions of Pelagianism as "Celtic Theology" without giving into the notions of Augustine's predestination. Serious scholars need to read O'Loughlin's book.

orthodoxy has many buried treasures

I find find her work impressive, mainly because she grapples with the tradition from the inside rather throwing stones from the outside- though when people quote Luce Irigary my eyes glaze over and I am out of my depth.

However, I became a supporter of women’s ordination quite early on and I found that this challenged my notions of catholicity. This book helped me to see that you can be loyal to the tradition while being, at the same time, critical of it.

Feminist "Freudian" and Nihilistic Attacks on the Catholic Faith--Don't Be Misled by the Beautiful Artwork on the Cover

It is almost blasphemous--as well as misleading--that Fra Angelico's beautiful "Annunciation" is on the cover of this volume. The reverent depiction of the Blessed Mother may be intended to suggest that this is an authentic work of devotion. Dear me, be forewarned: This book was developed from the author's doctoral dissertation, even though most publishers shun such works. Using the characteristic convoluted language, Tina Beattie creates a mishmash of jargon with Freudian, Nietzschean, and feminist terms and ideas to--ho hum, what else would we expect?-- attack "patriarchy" in the Catholic Church. This tired material has been kicking around for years, and the publisher of this book (and/or its parent company Crossroad--previously Herder & Herder) has been tirelessly disseminating it for the last fifty years.

To the author's discredit, she reaches a new low in describing the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the vilest homosexual and admittedly pagan terms.The author's specious arguments serve her goals of advocating and agitating for "womyn" priests. In addition, she believes that women are saved in a different way than men, but we know that Jesus Christ saves both sexes. No separate "salvation" is needed by women. A believing feminist, the author argues for the equality of women with men, then seems tp adopt the "sexist' view that women are superior.
Believing Christians and Catholics who make the mistake of purchasing this clunker may find its pages an excellent substitute for toilet paper.

This is an odd sort of book, but one that many readers will find interesting and useful. McAnulla (Univ. of Leeds, UK) teaches social and political metatheory, and obviously believes in the power of theories and ideas to shed light on matters of importance. He argues that theory has been rather neglected (that old British practicality, one assumes). What McAnulla has provided is a wonderful compendium and inventory, almost a catalog, of a wide variety of topics in social science theory. The volume covers a range of ideas, including traditional models of British politics, current theoretical frameworks, dominant ideologies, key institutional relationships, and constitutional reform. Thus, McAnulla deals with the many analytical categories that have been used to analyze British politics. In the midst of what others have seen as a revolutionary shift, the author argues for the enduring power of the British political tradition. His great insight is easy-to-read showing of his penetrating command of the subject matter. This is a MUST read for anyone seeking to understand the past present and future paths our society should contemplate.

In my opinion this is Jonathon Sack's Magnum Opus. In this book he clearly defines what it means to be a Jew and what makes Jews different. An absolute must for anyone who is looking to get into Judaism or would like to tickle their brain with some fundementals in Jewish thought and theology.
