Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) is remembered today only as an alleged 'Social Darwinist' who applied the theory of the survival of the fittest to society. Yet he was among the most influential and widely-read philosophers of the nineteenth century. There were few Victorian thinkers and scientists who did not know his work, and who did not formulate their own positions partly in reaction to his.

Michael Taylor's book provides the only detailed and reliable modern survey of the whole corpus of Spencer's thought. Taylor introduces a Spencer very different to his posthumous reputation: not primarily a political philosopher, but the architect of a comprehensive philosophical system that aimed to demonstrate the inevitability of human perfection through universal natural laws. He also locates the Synthetic Philosophy firmly in its place and time by showing how it developed out of the concerns of a group of like-minded British writers and thinkers during the 1850s.

Wells, the forgotten cosmopolitan who infleunced the world

This volume, coedited by Patrick Parrinder and myself, includes contributions by 24 authors, covering Wells's reception in the four corners of Europe. Covering such topics as his influence on postwar French and Soviet SF, the circumstances behind his works being censored in Ireland, Germany and Spain, his relationship to such contemporary authors as Marinetti and Karinthy and his near-invisible presence in Portugal. This book, though expensive, can be read with profit by the general reader, and will make an invaluable resource to all libraries with literary, historical and political interests. The book is part of the Reception of British Authors in Europe series (Woolf, Joyce already featured), it will prove unique in the series, however, due to Wells's extra-literary importance, from his interviews with Lenin and Stalin, to his world histories, his journalism covering peace conferences and offering solutions to world ills, as well as his science fiction, short stories, novels and film scripts. He infleunced later generations of sf writers, internationalists and film-makers, and will receive some credit for his importance in the pages of this might volume.

Examining some of the most important debates in post-Romantic aesthetics through highly focused textual readings of authors from Walter Pater and Henry James to Samuel Beckett and Alan Hollinghurst, this study investigates the dialectical position of irony in Aestheticism and its twentieth-century afterlives.

Aesthetic Afterlives constructs a far-reaching theoretical narrative by positioning Victorian Aestheticism as the basis of Literary Modernity. Aestheticism's cultivation of irony and reflexive detachment was central to this legacy, but it was also the focus of its own self-critique. Anxieties about the concept and practice of irony persisted through Modernism, and have recently been positioned in Hollinghurst's work as a symptom of the political stasis within post-modern culture. Referring to the recent debates about the ‘new aestheticism' and the politics of aesthetics, Eastham asks how a utopian Aestheticism can be reconstructed from the problematics of irony and aesthetic autonomy that haunted writers from Pater to Adorno.
