Hegel's 'Phenomenology of Spirit': A Reader's Guide (Reader's Guides), by Stephen Houlgate

Hegel's
Phenomenology of Spirit is probably
his most famous work. First published in 1807, it has exercised considerable
influence on subsequent thinkers from Feuerbach and Marx to Heidegger, Kojève,
Adorno and Derrida. The book contains many memorable analyses of, for example,
the master / slave dialectic, the unhappy consciousness, Sophocles' Antigone and the French Revolution and
is one of the most important works in the Western philosophical tradition. It
is, however, a difficult and challenging book and needs to be studied together
with a clear and accessible secondary text. Stephen Houlgate's Reader's Guide

Review
'Stephen Houlgate is one of the best and most respected Hegel scholars, and this is one of his best books: it is clear, helpful, and shows a deep understanding of Hegel's notoriously difficult text. For anyone seeking to get to grips with the Phenomenology, this will be an indispensable resource.' -- Robert Stern, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield, UK. 'Concentrating on reconstructing the underlying logic of Hegel's arguments in the Phenomenology of Spirit, Stephen Houlgate provides an exceptionally clear introduction to this notoriously difficult work. Houlgate's introduction will be especially useful for both students and specialists because it is lucid and concise, yet always remains closely related to the text and rests on impressive scholarship.' -- Alison Stone, Reader in European Philosophy at Lancaster University, UK. Stephen Houlgate's guide is undoubtedly based on years of patiently guiding students through the Phenomenology at Warwick University and this pedagogical intent is its great strength and virtue. It concentrates on the first four chapters of Hegel's book and succeeds admirably in setting out how the logical nature of the arguments unpack themselves. This allows the reader to concentrate on the task of following what Hegel is saying in particular paragraphs without having to grapple with larger questions of interpretation. -- Sean Sheehan Irish Left Review Clear and concise [and] providing crucial insights. -- Jean-Michel Buee, Universite de Grenoble I Archives de Philosophie (Bloomsbury translation)

High Time That the Situation was Clarified
By William E. Boney
This Guide shouldn't be the last word on Hegel's "Phenomenology of Spirit" but it does set a very high standard for similar works that follow. Tackling Hegel's book [Miller's translation] is an extremely difficult task riddled with terminology that is hard to get on top of today but an aim worth expending some sweat to achieve - dare I say that it has `utility' even today. And Houlgate's Guide paves the way for such an endeavor. Philosophy is a hobby - call me a student - and I was able to follow the dialectical conflicts with only a bump here and there that I marked for further study - the guide to further reading at the back of the book is helpful in that regard. The test of course is to [re]read Hegel's book without losing the plot and the Guide made that task a lot easier. Hegel was a trained theologian as well as a crack philosopher and the two elements are woven together seamlessly as anyone reading attentively can see. For instance it is through religion that consciousness becomes self-consciousness. In self-consciousness, consciousness itself, not an outside object is the object of consciousness, or truth is identical with certainty. And the aim of Hegelianism is to grasp truth as self-certainty. On that score the chapters on religion and absolute knowing, in particular the transition, pages 173 to 189, in the Guide were spot on in my estimation. The religious man's trust in God is recognition of the identity of God with his own rational being. Hegel said that he was a religious philosopher and what he was doing was using philosophical ideas to illustrate for sophisticated educated people what faith was all about.

Houlgate's reading guide is clear, comprehensible, and affordable ...
By David Manuel Alvarez
Houlgate's reading guide is clear, comprehensible, and affordable. I purchased it to assist me in reading the Phenomenology of Spirit in a philosophy class I took during the summer. Houlgate provides helpful commentary, a clear exposition of the text and its main argument, and references to other sources or authors who might assist in understanding Hegel's insightful but dense text. He also provides reading questions that can help you see if you have actually grasped the main flow of the argumentation thus far or whether it might be advisable to reread certain sections. He does omit some aspects of the text which is perhaps inevitable, but at least in a couple cases, I thought the omissions were unhelpful. Overall, this book is a very, very helpful and accessible guide to begin the task of reading Hegel's Phenomenology.
