Brian Paltridge's Discourse Analysis: An Introduction is an extremely welcome addition to the growing number of books devoted to this increasingly important area. Exceptionally, the volume strikes an excellent balance between both spoken and written discourses, as well as between theoretical and applied studies. The coverage of previous work is comprehensive, but many of the copious illustrations are drawn from lively contemporary texts that will appeal to readers. Further, each of the seven central chapters is rounded off with the discussion questions, suggestions for data analysis projects, and directions for further reading. Finally, the writing is lively and accessible. There is every prospect then that Paltridge will become a standard text for undergraduates and graduates studying discourse analysis for the first time.

(my fav being in the Cambridge Series) I'm not sure breezing over that is the best use of space for DA

The most accessible, readable, and comprehensive introduction for its size. He covers nearly every platform of DA and the different areas of study constituting them. You would do well to have this one read and referred to if you are doing anything with DA. The only downside to covering so much in such a short space is just that--he needs to kind of breeze over topics that really need deeper treatment for someone to be able to use them. For instance, his section on "Pragmatics" does indeed cover all the basics needed to begin your journey through that field, but is it really necessary in a book of DA? The issue of pragmatics is an entire field of study all in its own right and many volumes have been dedicated to it. (my fav being in the Cambridge Series) I'm not sure breezing over that is the best use of space for DA. This could have been replaced by a deeper treatment of his section on Halliday's SFL which is actually DA focused and expressly so. Again, only a minor criticism though. The work is top notch, no doubt. I would've given 4.5 stars if it were possible.

Partridge has produced exactly the stlye of text that allows me to grasp Discourse Analysis, and build up to an intermediate level of understanding. Not a quick read, I took lots of notes and will save this text.
