Review
"Gail Ashton's Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales represents a new direction in the venerable handbook tradition. While she does not ignore traditional topics like sources, structure, diction, and genre, Ashton recontextualizes their significance in light of the latest research into late-medieval material culture and discursive practices, and the uses to which 'Chaucer' has been put by later artists and critics. Likewise, Chaucer's well-known preoccupations (or better said, those Chaucerian themes with which critics traditionally have been fascinated)—are seen afresh through Ashton's effortless command of the strengths and weaknesses of current theoretical approaches to Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales. With an approachable style that is conversational yet precise, Ashton has freed Chaucer's great work from the strictures of a hide-bound, univocal textuality and released it into the contemporary conversations concerning gender and performance, hybridity and reception, as well as memoria and auctoritas, and academia and theoria. The Chaucer that emerges from Ashton's succinct but powerful survey is an author fully immersed in his culture and experimenting with the traditions of his time, but a writer equally and inevitably reinterpreted by succeeding generations, including our own. Gail Ashton's Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is Chaucer for the twenty-first century." - Daniel T. Kline, Associate Professor of English at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

Slavoj Žižek is widely regarded as one of the world's most important contemporary thinkers. His work has contributed dramatically to the reinvention and revivification of many key theoretical and political debates. Indeed, his vociferous and challenging body of work amounts to a sustained, ground-breaking, terrain-shifting and far reaching intervention into a large number of academic disciplines, intellectual fields and cultural debates. The Truth of Žižek addresses the rigorous critical assessment demanded by this broad and increasingly influential corpus. This timely and compelling collection of essays from an international team of leading Žižekian scholars addresses the full range of Žižek's theoretical interventions, assessing critically the political, philosophical, psychoanalytical, cultural and institutional stakes of his work. Each chapter engages with and challenges Žižek's thought to explicate a key aspect of his work, clarifying its importance and challenging its claims through rigorous critique. By focusing on Žižek's contributions to these disciplines, fields and debates, this collection sets out to diagnose and assess the emergence of a ' Žižekian moment' within contemporary intellectual, cultural and political events. The Truth of Žižek provides the first sustained engagement with and assessment of the significant impact of Žižek's work. This compelling and valuable collection of essays from cutting edge scholars picks up the gauntlet thrown down by Žižek: the demand that his readers respond with 'the coldness and cruelty of true friendship.'

Mentioned as tie-in to film 'Zizek'. (Publishing News)

Anthologies providing context on contemporary thought and contemporary thinkers often err on the side of eulogy and submission to the reputation of the specific philosopher-hero. This collection of essays on the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek at least has the advantage of being a precise opposite to this usual norm. In the same way that Žižek's own work pulls no punches in its assessments and critiques of the other thinkers, so too this collection vehemently challenges the bases of Žižek's myriad claims and counter-claims. Indeed, several of the essays adopt the strategy of personalizing the argument even towards ad hominem points (a strategy Žižek lambasts in his Afterward). " - Dr Jones Irwin, The Philosopher

embarrassing 'scholarship'-but can function for some higher end
By noeton
Perhaps the idea behind this book is: 'With what passes for 'truth' these days, why not try obfuscation?'

When the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason emerged, Kant was ignored except for a few concerned empiricists. Their awkward attempts to render Kant a 'higher Berkeleyian' nevertheless proved useful in provoking further efforts to grasp the critical turn, leading to the later developments in German Idealism which we all know and love. Let us hope "The Truth of Zizek" can come to merit a similar place in history. If not, it will surely find its place in the dustbin.

A collection of committed culture studies hacks, deconstructionists, and discourse theorists, all with bayonets fixed, it suffers from a tenor of so many butcher's wives who can't fully integrate the challenge to their positions Zizek has been laying out for years. There is very little, if any, substantive engagement with the core of Zizek's theory. At its best there are some respectable and interesting attempts, but at its worst there is little but name-calling and misrepresentation borne of lazy research and old-fashioned sophistry. One is tempted to think the entire project of the book was to license further academic straw-maning of Zizek in a desperate strategy to prolong a serious confrontation with his philosophy. Yet as though their own dictum of tolerant fairness proved their undoing, in the final essay Zizek responds, (bitterly, as he hoped for more,) laying waste to their efforts. It is so effective, one is further tempted by the conspiracy theory that Zizek orchestrated the whole affair to make himself look good by way of contrast with his rivals.

If you are seeking the truth of Zizek, this work remains to be done. If you are looking for the truth of the Academy, you've found it. Three stars for this moderately provocative bungled effort. I suppose students of current philosophical trends, who require easy pickings for their scholarship, will find this book an abundant resource.

commodification of Zizek,
By scarecrow
This focus is what Zizek abhors, if you ever hear him, while twitching-touching incessantly his nose, face;sweeping back fast his eyebrows; this commodification is the very paradox he loves and hates,Has he been "concretized" now? No I hope not, well not with one single Book as this one;In the process we can say the dialectic of technologies of the Self is amplified beyond Foucault's "fragmentizing" power indices; He is now transformed.I don't know if he likes that. He'd rather be the one "commodifying".

Taking him down a notch or two(if that was the intent here),is perhaps a comradly endeavor, Love is given, a Badiou-ian category of ontology; or peerless cognitive illumination the kind Dennett does. We don't know.But Zizek loves the complexities of the Mind and where it goes, What it desires,So a "Critique" can "Doublkeback" onto itself, if it is not careful. For we all desire the same thing;
We, most of us as Zizek loves the welters and nested areas of ambiguity and often finds it in Cinema or Opera. We feel much like Wotan, in control but out of it in what we have done. What Zizek has done then is open to a "Kritique".
His own Lacanian "comfort zones", Literature, the Cinema,Popular culture are places to start; That's where Ideology resides there within the Kung Fu Panda.. In fact the two writers here claim there is too much opaque unexplained undecipherables in Slavoj, that need thought. We need to think clearly and tidy him up. .

But the subject here is difficult to take-apart,to see weaknesses.
In reclaiming Hegel and Lacan via Marx, Zizek has full arsenals of reserve, he can go 30 rounds in a 15 Round Bout. And shows he's more committed to certain subjects and places in the globe than those who are suppose to be, like his Middle East bouts with Bernard-Henri Levy.
It's like saying you don't like the shape of a circle because it is too much a "circle", Why can't it be something else.
Theory provides predictabilities,The Lordship and Bondsman, consistent with how we function within the Real; things we don't know we become.

So Bowman and Stamp got lots to do within The Hegel-Lacan-via Marx reclamations. Those are all strong "force fields", easily providing "Cognitive Maps"(as Jameson says someplace)for Zizek and his intense performative impassioned Lectures.
He has made himself impenetrable, like North Korea,Kansas or parts of Lebanon itself. Zizek's "Great Wall" are many and he depends on the tried and the tested by bringing fresh accents and content to every subject he touches and twitches around.
Zizek's ambiguities reflects its own resonance in the hinterlands of theory. He has "Hollywoodized" this for us;So how do we pin it down.

These twin movement(s) between the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real, again Lacanian "pillars" of consciousness are strong and everything in between doesn't yield good diatribe.
Everything between Zizek also finds fascinating; His incessant digressions(improvisations) are ones trying to discover the boundaries between one to the other;(where Art ends and Reality begins, or where language tells us more about Alice's Tea Party) Well, one digression is worth a Thousand Pictures;

But the two authors here, well versed in theory that Zizek spouts and promuligates finds ample ground to tweak the Slovenian 'bear' at times but only in moments of those nested hibernations Adorno, and Badiou would call "Universals".Unalterable at times, things that transcend the Present.

You can't pin Slavoj down for too long because the thought itself is always in flux-motion,anxiety-ridden,progressive, searching, and when it does stop it does stop on lifeworld thinking we all can hang our hats on.When it does stop he's off to a new subject a new paradigm to contemplate.

What this book does do is start the process for more critique of what we already have of Slavoj, Where do we meet him then?, on the other side of the mountain? No, right here and now, we work backwards, as Adorno daid of Hegel, what does he mean to current reality as we find it Right Now! Books like this unfortunate are part of the system to be criticized;the self-sustaining system self-perpetuating itself, isn't that capitalism?

You need to go directly to the sources,Zizeks and those suggested in Slavoj if you want to be a brother or a sister and find weak points, weak realms, "unknown" Rumsfeldian places. Take for example Slavoj lack of real everyday political activism,He learns much from talking on the phone, away from the Frontlines; his glibness(only at times) with economics; He rarely mentions Peter Gowan, Giovanni Arrighi, or Robert Brenner, soul-mates par excellance I'd think, But Wait ! that might be the next Book. . . He does have a focus on the classic all-encompassing "political economy" of Marx, but again it is only applied in case by case manner, not seeing the full systemic of a situation, perhaps like a David Harvey or Mike Davis.
To see the content of current financial meltdown Slavoj is only a passing place.Go to where it really happens,Of course He would tell you the same as well.

Saturn's Jews: On the Witches' Sabbat and Sabbateanism (The Robert and Arlene Kogod Library of Judaic Studies), by Moshe Idel

This book explores the phenomenon of Saturnism, namely the belief that the planet Saturn, the seventh known planet in ancient astrology, was appointed upon the Jews, who celebrated the Sabbath, the seventh day of the Jewish week.
Moshe Idel details how the anonymous, late 14th century Sefer Ha-Peliyah was to have disturbing consequences in the Jewish world three centuries later, interweaving luminaries with the cultural, historical, religious, and philosophical concepts of their day, and demonstrating how cultural agents were inadvertently instrumental in the mid-17th-century mass-movement Sabbateanism that led to the conviction that Sabbatai Tzevi was the Messiah.
Exploring how the tragic misperception of the Jewish Sabbath by the non-Jewish world led to a linkage of Jews with sorcery in 14th and 15th-century Europe, associating their holy day with the witches' 'Sabbat' gathering, Idel brings this wide-ranging study into the present day with an analysis of 20th-century scholarship and thought influenced by Saturnism, particularly lingering themes related to melancholy in the works of Gershom Scholem and Walter Benjamin.

A very valuable resource
By Jay C.
There is much to praise in Prof. Idel's monograph. He does an excellent job of demonstrating that Sabbateanism was not solely a result of Lurianic Kabbalah, but rather an outgrowth of several factors working in concert. He persuasively shows that Jewish astrological speculation from the 14th to the 17th centuries C.E. -- and Jewish ideas about the planet Saturn, in particular -- influenced Sabbatai Tzevi and created fertile ground for the spread of Sabbatean ideas. Prof. Idel adduces numerous sources confirming the role of the planet Saturn in Jewish theology and ritual, and these sources tell their own story irrespective of Prof. Idel's commentary. The hard work that Prof. Idel did to compile these sources is to be praised and justifies the price of his book.

Substantively, I have one minor criticism. Prof. Idel's thesis is flawed insofar as he dismisses the possibility that astrology and Saturnism was original to Judaism. He sees astrology as a 14th-century external influence on Judaism that led, in the 17th century, to Sabbatai Tzevi's self-perception as an earthly manifestation of Saturn and that made the Jewish world of the 17th century receptive to Tvevi's messianic claim. Prof. Idel fails to appreciate that astrology was a widely accepted science in the ancient world and that all ancient religions must be understood through the lens of astrological ideas. Among other things, he misses an opportunity to interpret the so-called "dark side" of Saturn as the very essence of Jewish non-dualism. Prof. Idel's thesis would be stronger if he accepted the possibility that Arabic texts permitted a rediscovery in the 14th century of an astrological core that was part of Judaism from the beginning. In this regard, Prof. Idel overlooks much interesting evidence that begs for thorough analysis.

For example, Abraham hailed from "Light of the Chaldeans" ('Ur Kasdim). The Chaldeans of Mesopotamia were so deeply involved with astrology that the word "Chaldean" eventually became a synonym for "astrologer," and the phrase "Light of the Chaldeans" can only refer to the study of heavenly lights. (Today, Vedic astrology is called "Jyotish," which means "light.") In addition, when Abraham tells YHVH that he has no sons to inherit from him, YHVH urges Abraham to read his destiny in the stars: "And He took him out to the outside, and He said, `Look, please, toward the heavens and recount the planets if you are able to recount them,' and he said to him, `So will be your offspring.' " (Genesis 15:5) Also, the Jewish practice of observing the Sabbath came (along with Abraham) from Mesopotamia, where it was observed on the new moon, full moon, and the 8th and 22nd days of the lunar month, and where it had clear astrological implications. There is some evidence that the Jewish Sabbath, too, was originally synchronized with the phases of the moon and that it became a weekly cycle only after the Babylonian exile. Significantly, every observance of the Sabbath that is mentioned in the Torah occurs on a new moon, a full moon, or on the 8th or 22nd day of the lunar month.

Several other scriptural proof-texts establish that astrology (and the effort to transcend astrology) was a central part of ancient Jewish theology and ritual. For example:

Deuteronomy 4:19: "And lest you lift your eyes toward the heavens and you see the sun and the moon and the planets, all the legion of the heavens, and you be drawn and you worship them and serve them that YHVH, your god, apportioned to all the nations under all the heavens."

Judges 5:20: "From the heavens, the stars fought . . . ."

Amos 5:25-26: "In the wilderness for forty years, O House of Israel, you carried . . . your images of Saturn (Chiun) -- the planet of your god -- that you made for yourselves." (The Hebrew text refers to "Chiun"; the Septuagint (2nd or 3rd century B.C.E.) translates "Chiun" as "Remphan," which was the Egyptian name for the planet Saturn.)

Psalms 19:2-7: "The heavens recount the glory of El; the sky relates the work of his hand . . . ."

Job 22:12-14: "Is not God the high-point of the heavens and, see, the highest of the planets that are aloft? And [so] you say, `What does El know? He will judge [from] behind darkness. Thick clouds hide Him, and He will not see, and He will traipse the compass of the heavens.' "

Job 38:33: "Do you know the decrees of the heavens?"

Ecclesiastes 1:9: "What has been, that will be, and what was done, that will be done, and there is not any new thing under the sun." (That is, "under the astrological spheres.") See also Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 [all events are determined by time].

In addition, the Babylonian Talmud (4th or 5th century C.E.) expressly validates the power of the astrological forces. (See, e.g., Shabbat 156a.)

Despite my criticism of Prof. Idel's thesis, I am very grateful to Prof. Idel for his valuable contribution to our understanding of medieval Judaism. This book should be read by all people who are interested in the origins of Sabbateanism and the role of Saturn in Jewish thought.

A very good book, but be warned that the topic is very, very, focused. It's about what the title says, but little else.

Shakespeare's Double Helix (Shakespeare Now!), by Henry S. Turner

What does it mean to make life? This book focuses on one of the key questions for culture and science in both Shakespeare's time and our own. Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer Night's Dream during a period when the 'new science' had begun to unsettle the foundations of knowledge about the natural world. Through close analysis of the play and reflection on modern genetic engineering, Turner examines developments in early modern culture as it sought to come to terms with the new forces of magic, astrology, alchemy and mechanics - fields of knowledge that preoccupied the most adventurous intellects of Shakespeare's period and that promised limitless power over nature. Shakespeare's writing sheds light on current developments in science, ethics, law, and religion in contemporary culture. This book reveals the richness and peculiarity of early scientific thought in Shakespeare's time and shows how the questions he poses remain fundamental as the nature of 'life' has become one of the most pressing political, ethical, and philosophical problems for society today.

"The ambitious project of the Shakespeare NOW series is to bridge the gap between 'scholarly thinking and a public audience' and 'public audience and scholarly thinking'. Spinoza's Ethics: A Reader's Guide (Reader's Guides), by J. Thomas Cook

The Ethics is one of the undisputed masterworks of early modern philosophy. In this single volume Spinoza offers the reader an unorthodox account of God, a novel version of the mind-body relation, a systematic theory of the emotions and a detailed prescription for human virtue and blessedness. Too controversial to be published during his lifetime, it was surreptitiously printed by Spinoza's friends after his death. Nowadays the Ethics is studied in university classes as an exemplary work of early modern rationalism.
In Spinoza's 'Ethics': A Reader's Guide, J. Thomas Cook explains the philosophical background against which the book was written and the key themes inherent in the text. The book then guides the reader to a clear understanding of the text as a whole, before exploring the reception and influence of this classic philosophical work. This is the ideal companion to study of this most influential and challenging of texts.

Review
"J. Thomas Cook has penned a readable and detailed introduction to one of the most difficult works of the western philosophical tradition... Cook provides a section by section commentary on the Ethics, with helpful questions for student readers at the end of each discussion. Throughout the work, and particularly in the last chapter, the author provides an understanding of the controversy surrounding Spinoza and his philosophy." Grant Havers, Trinity Western University, Canada, 2009.

"Cook's guide is readable and precise. His style compares favourably in clarity to many other such guides...Importantly, Cook's is one of few recent guidebooks to make a concentrated effort to place Spinoza's philosophy in its historical context and appraise its legacy...Cook has provided a clear and thorough introduction to this well-established reading of Spinoza."British Journal for the History of Philosophy, 2009
