Key concepts in "Classical theism"
By K. Scott
This book is slightly misnamed. The author says in his introduction that the book is about the philosophy of "classical theism"(ct), not religion in general. Sweetman see ct as a "worldview" that, like any worldview, should be able to present an argument for the "reasonableness" of its position. I think the author does a good job of walking the line between defense and presentation.
Appropriately, for a book of philosophy, there are no arguments derived from the Bible or his personal faith position. He introduces the arguments for ct from "design", the nature of ct's conception of God, the problem for ct of the existence of "evil", and the relations between ct and science. Only in the last chapter does Sweetman touch on the relations between ct and other world religions' worldviews.
I don't know how an author could give the "key concepts" of religion in general in so short a book but, if that is what is wanted then inquiring minds should look elsewhere. If the reader wants an introduction to the philosophical issues of ct then this book seems like a good place to start. There is good bibliography too. I was a non-theist before and remain one after this book but I enjoyed his presentation. By the way, I read this book in parallel with Julian Baggini's Atheism : a very short introduction and enjoyed that triangular conversation. I recommend this book for what it sets out to do, but not for what the miss-title suggests that it does.
